**PLEASE HELP** Anyone With Rims

Ok heres the problem. My parents have decided that the maxima needs new tires. So me taking every advantage of this thought it would be a perfect time to get some nice rims put on the car.(since all i got now are just hubcaps) Well at first my parents seemed alright with it...so i went and picked out the rims i like. The rims are 17x8 and i can get a good deal on them. But... a mechanic at my dads works said that by puttin on bigger rims then the car was made for it can mess up the axles or joints or something like that. so is this true...? If not please help me and prove this guy wrong. Or even just tell me what size rims you have and how long youve had them and if youve had any problems with them.
this would help out sooo much
thanks in advance!

18X8s here and no problems with axles except for my VERY aggressive driving style. At one time, I put 17X9 Cobra rims with 275/40/17 tires on the front of the max just for fun. They looked like drag slicks, and I still had no problems. You'll be fine with 17's. Go for it.

I have 18x8.5" rims on my maxima and ive never had a problem. if you do get bigger rims you probably will want to get your car lowered though just because it will look "raised"

Just ask your mechanic how that is going to adversely effect the axles and joints and see what kind of baloney story he gives you. As long as you keep the same overall diameter and a close offset, all the geometry and forces on those components remain nearly the same. What, is he worried the larger rims may snap the driveshaft or something

your mechanic is either an idiot, or your parents are so against getting you the rims that they decided to tell him on the side to convince you not to buy them.

well 15's will serve you well. Might as well use the stock ones and use the cash for better tires

I really don't see the point in buying 15" aftermarket wheels. Just stick with the hubbies for now.

Okay, here's the deal. Putting a bigger wheel and tire combo on a car won't cause any damage directly, BUT they can be harder on components, which might be what the mechanic is trying to get at (but probably doesn't know it ). There are a few reasons for this. The first is because larger wheels and tires are usually heavier than stock, which will put more strain on the suspension in general as it works to keep it in place and when it bounces around. Second is if you change the offset of the wheel a lot, which can strain the bearings more because of the different leverage. Also large, low profile tires transmit more of the road's imperfections and bumps up through the suspension (you'll feel it through the steering wheel) than our poofy stock tires do.

That said, lots of people run 17" wheels without problems it seems. Just make sure they're between +30 and +35 (stock btw) offset. Or you can split the difference and suggest 16" wheels like those off of 4th Gens or something. They'll still look good and be a handling upgrade, but won't be as heavy or ride as hard. Just be CAREFUL what style of wheel you get if you absolutely must get 15" wheels. Ask DA-MAX about his 15" bus tires and you'll see what I mean. Our stock rims look good now only because they don't have a lot of empty space in them, so the tire looks smaller. Put 5-spokes on there with lots of empty space in them, and you'll get the bus tire effect... HTH, and good luck.
