Ok

Here goes.

Lighter wheels = better accleration, launches right.

I was reading that 1 pound of wheel weight equates to 8 curb weight pounds.

So say the 48lb factory 17" is replaced with a semi-light 25lb 18"

48lbs-25lb= 23lbs. lighter than factory

23lbs x 8lbs (1 lb of wheel weight = 8lbs of curb weight) = 184lbs

184lbs. (theoretical curb weight) x 4 wheels = 736lbs.

Now a car that is theoretically 736 lbs lighter is goin to be waaaay faster.

Am I off in my thinking??? Comments Please! Thanks.

Yes, you're way off. Where did you get 48 lbs from? Our stock RIMS are 25 lbs each. Now, if you add tires, they are 23 lbs each. 4 rims and 4 tires = 192 lbs.

Now, if you have 18" rims with the same weight, it's still gonna make you run slower, because of weight distribution from the center of axis.

I knew it couldn't be that much of a difference. I have gxe 15" steelies, could you give me an accurate representation of a set-up with 18's. Would it make me faster or slooower.

Thanks.

I don't know about this "1lb = 8lb" stuff, but if you want better acceleration and less weight then you should probably stick to your 15" steelies or get 15" lightweight wheels. Then match them with some lightweight tires, as some tire models are heavier than others.

If they weighed the same, a 15" wheel would be better than an 18" one because the weight (and thus inertia) is closer to the center of mass rather than further out, which would be more work to accelerate.

Anyway, this is why people always tell you that if you can afford lightweight wheels, get them.
