different circumference for rear and front? bad idea?

what will happen if I put tires with diff circumference in the rear and in the front? I'm guessing that since they are not directly connected (for the lack of a better word), it would be ok. what do you think?
I have the stock fronts (205/65/15) that are fine but the rears need to go. I wanted to get all for in 225/60/15, but have a chance to get two 225/55/15 Michelins cheap, so I am thinking of putting them in the rear abd keeping my current fronts for now, and then changing all later...
so, how does it sound?

wider tires will give me better traction, i am not doing it for any other reason. also, i am asking because this will give me an opportunity to get tires for a fraction of what it would cost to replace all 4...especially that the fronts are still good.

thanks

a lot, obviously. 225/55/15 are "recommended", among others, 15" 55 series on 6.5" rims according to the tire & rim assc. one would think it should be safe if it's "recommended", as opposed to "permitted"......no?
