You can get some 15" steelies from a junk yard for cheap and put winter tires on them, something like Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50.

I've got some BFGoodrich Winter Slaloms, they run great. I do have 4 of them though (damn Canadian winters).

I use Falken 512's on my car. These are all season tires that handle fairly well in winter. I have 18's on my car but im sure other sizes may be able to handle better because of the lower profile on mine.

Hey,
I have the conti extreme on the 16" rims for my '99 and they are great. I live outside Philly and they handled fine with no problems. We also have them on my wifes Outback. handled like a dream; got to love all-wheel drive.

I got to try mine out in the 22 inches of snow we got just west of Boston!!!!

They have excellent traction in the snow, just got them installed friday so I can't comment on anything else yet...

Winter Tires

Was driving to work about a week or so ago and we had just received some freezing rain and then snow. So you can imagine how the roads were, like a skating rink! Still have my summer blowtenzas, and driving to work I lost control about 4 times and almost did a 360, then driving home on the highway the wind was blowing accross the road and was trying to push me off to the shoulder, had to keep correcting with the steering and could tell that the blowtenzas were slipping on the ice the whole time, quite irritating. So after that experience, I decided to get snow tires and steel rims to mount them on. After searching the city (Winnipeg Manitoba Canada) and finding no rims to fit my car I decided to go to www.tirerack.com and ordered 4 Bridgestone Blizzak's on steel rims mounted and balanced with proper lugnuts. The cost was reasonable and it only took 5 days for them to deliver from Indiana. Received them on friday (2 days ago) and installed them yesterday. Took the car for a test drive right after, and it was like nite and day from the blowtenzas, suddenly I have traction and control, how novel! The only thing I am a bit concerned about is the uncovered wheelnut on the fronts only (strange). Is there any kind of aftermarket cover for these?

I got ContiExtremeContacts from Tirerack.com in 215x50x17 for $91 ea. Ordered on Monday, tires arrived on Friday, installed at Sams Club for $9 per tire:mounted, balanced, new valve stems (they install for members even if you didn't buy them from Sam's.) We had a 20+ " storm last week and a 10" storm with 12 hours of freezing drizzle this week. The Conti's are the best tire I've ever had in the snow by a considerable margin...very grippy and sticky in the cold. The ice traction was a real surprise...very good...always in control with only reasonable caution necessary. My Nissan Pathfinder with brand new BFG All-Terrain KO's did better in the real deep stuff, but the Maxima was actually better than the Pathy on ice, partially due to the traction control which did activate intermittently however the Pathy has limited slip. So I went shopping in the Pathy during the storm, but drove the Maxima to work the next morning while it was still freezing drizzle.
As far as economizing is concerned, if the tires you had for the rear were even a mediocre performing all-season, you would be fine if it had decent tread left unless you drove like a fool in the slick stuff and forced yourself into a fishtail. Problem is, it sounds like you have a real summer tire which makes the rear a lot more likely to skid. But doen't New York road conditions improve dramatically the day after a storm? It might be worth considering public transit when the weather goes sour.
Another winter option: 4 Kelly-Springfield Snowtrakker ST/2, I got two at Sam's club for my son's Toyota Camry and paid $36 per tire, plus $9 to mount and balance. The largest size: 235x75x15 were only $50 a tire. They are rated "Mountain and Snowflake" for Severe Winter Use and have an excellent tread pattern with lots of siping. Not noisy, either. A real bargain. Another inexpensive option is BFG Winter Slalom at $75. Personally, I like the all-season Conti option the best, and I live in central Mass at 1000 ft.
In 1990, I almost wrecked a brand new Accord EX just two weeks old due to the horrible snow performance of the Michelin MXV's that were on it...like having snow boards under the wheels! Saved by a snowbank.I know the feeling and it isn't fun. Good luck, but study, then buy.

Danno- I have the steel wheels w/ BFGoodrich winter Slaloms and used my stock allow lug nuts. I couldn't find a center cap for front wheels anywhere so made some myself. I found small Nascar candle tins that I cut and painted. Fits snuggly over 2 3/4" flange. The steel wheels are black, painted outer rim silver and chrome lug nuts and silver center cap in front and painted back axle cap silver. It actually looks pretty cool. I also sprayed a little WD-40 over front nut/caps before covering w/ my home made caps. They were rusting behind my alloys.
