SSR wheels

Has anyone experience with SSR competition wheels (the forged ones)? I'm concerned with durability. Some people with Miatas have bent them. I live in Seattle where the roads are not smooth but mostly devoid of potholes.

Welcome to the forum. I have no trouble with SSR wheels, but I'd stay away from the Comp, because I have heard bad stories about it. BTW, I'm also from Seattle. I have exactly the same car as you, a black 2002 SE.

The "stories" I have heard mosty revolve around one Miata owner who bent several rims and wanted tire rack to warenty them. He got ****ed after they would not warenty them and started a big stink. None of the Maxima owners that I know of with them have ever had a problem. As with any rim, if you dont have allot of tire on their it will bend. I have the 17x8 w/235/45-17s and I have hit a few pot holes, no damage. Now if I had the 18x8 with the lower profile tire I think they would be more suceptible to damage. I love my SSR Type C's!

I'm looking at the Comps, 17x7.5, with P-Zero 225/45. The rims are only 13.6 lbs which is why I'm a little leary, not to mention $355 each.

The SSR rims ARE Semi-Solid forged and are very strong. Check out TireRack's link: SSR

That being said, any rim whether forged or not, can be bent. When an automobile rim hits a pot hole at speed, thousands of pounds of force per square inch are exerted on it. The faster you are going the higher that force will be.

I recently dented one of my Semi-Solid forged SSR GT1s on the LIE here in NY. The bozos are fixing the highway and shifted the lanes over to where the left hand lane now runs right over the water gutters. I didnt notice it until too late. The car took a tremendous pounding on the left front rim ( I was able to swerve in time to avoid the left rear hitting that monstrous gutter). When I got home i thought the rim would be demolished. It bent so slightly that it took me 2 minutes to actually find the damage. If the rim were not Semi-solid forged I am sure I would have needed a new rim.

No they are not very different from forged rims as the link that I provided states......"The finished product offers mechanical properties very similar to a forged wheel without the high production and tooling costs of a forged wheel."

What would be an example of a fully forged wheel and how much would it cost? I doubt the increased strength, if significant, would warrant spending a $500+ per rim, or whatever they cost.

Even if you dented one or even two SSF rims ($350-$400 each for SSR GT1s) enough to need buying new rims, you'd probably still be spending less money. SterlingMist00's testimony is proof of how strong SSF is.

Enlighten me if I'm way off here.
