New Continental "Extreme Contact" tires
I thought I'd share my input on a new set of Continental "Extreme Contact" tires I just had installed -- 215/55/16.
They are pretty nice. They are V-speed rated (up to 149MPH) and have an all-season tread. They are relatively quieter than all the other Z-rated tires I have used. Of course; the steering response is not razor sharp like a Z tire but it is still quite good for a Maxima's capabilities. My previous tires have been Bridgestone S-O3s and Dunlop SP-9000s.
The tread itself appears to have a good design for evacuating water while still having chunky blocks that look good for snow traction. Dry traction seems very good. I can take on-ramps with virtually the same amount of speed as before with decent control.
Road noise is very good. Definitely quieter than the Z-rated tires.
Tire size is measured from sidewall to sidewall. Most sporty tires have a very high proportion of tread width to sidewal width. I was afraid that these V-rated tires might look really rounded with a skinny tread width relative to the sidewall width. That is not the case with these Continentals. Cosmetically, the tread width looks just as masculine as the other Z-rated tires for this 215 size.
This tire has very high ratings in all categories on the TireRack website. For the first few days of driving, I think I am in agreement.
I run the pressures on the high side: Around 40PSI front and rear.
Maybe it is not the all-out autocrossing tire. But for spirited crusing, I think its great.
