Kumho Ecsta MX reviews...

Anyone tried them?

I need new tires this spring. Would rather not spend close to $200/tire if I don't have to. I've been using 712's for a few years and have liked them, they were quite good for the price.

But, for about $30/tire more I can get the MX's. I'm open to other suggestions as well (need 235/45/17 tires).

I can't put any wider on a 7.5" rim, can I?

Thanks.

They're getting fantastic reviews in autox community. Fantastic dry grip, decent wet grip, and they don't overheat easily. As good as the BFG KD's and possibly better than Falken Azenis. For a "Max" performance tire they probably can't be beat.

Both Natl Tours this year were won by STS on MX's sofar over the Azenis.

I have them. Good tires. Very sticky, but wear pretty easy. I might try Nitto 555s next.

I've also heard they're good from reading other forums. IF you're looking for a more hardcore performance tire, that is. Keep in mind the tradeoffs as these tires are designed more towards the "competition" side of the market than the 712's are.

I got around 20,000 on my last set. But decided to stick with them again. I plan on upgrading to 19s in the near future. When I do that, I am going to try Nittos

If these tires are good as you guys say, then $132 per tire(235/40/18) at tirerack is a steal!

MX vs Falken Azenis Sport... Those are on the top of my list right now. I had the 712 and was thoroughly unimpressed. Braking stood out as the worse characteristic. Acceleration was 2nd, since I could spin them quite easily. As for taking turns, they squeel early but broke progressively.

I'm on Azenis Sports right now and have no complains, except for poor wet weather traction, but that's a given with DOT approve race tires. MX won't be much better. The only reason I'd consider MX is the 235 size that Falken does not carry. However, Falken's edge is quite square compared to MX, so you're probably putting down the same amount of surface area.

Don't take TireRack testimonials too seriously... the 712 were highly rated and the reviews were glowing... but I personaly didn't like them. I guess if you don't push your car hard very often, they are excellent tires, like the HTR+.

I wouldn't suggest using MX in any inclimate weather. Think of MX and Azenis Sport as street legal track tires. The huge blocks tread are awesome for sticking to the dry road, but if you throw in water, the water's got nowhere to escape and you're left hydroplaning. I cannot take my Azenis Sports above 40mph when it's raining.
I would never take an MX or Azenis Sport in the snow. Maybe with snow chains, but why chew up a set of "track" tires?
If you're thinking of going snow, then All-Seasons should be considered. However, the best all-season tire will not compare to an equivalent summer/track tire. Having 2 sets of tires is a good idea and switch them seasonally. You shouldn't be going 9/10ths in poor weather anyways, so the MX is useless in winter.
