Tire dilemna

Tire dilemna

I am soooo looking forward to getting rid of the RE92's on my 2003 SE but I am undecided on what size tire to upgrade to. I do a lot of highway driving and would like to get something a little more compliant than the stock 225/50/17s, something that will protect the rims a little better, and lastly fill up the wheel wells better.

I know 235/50/17s would fit and fit the bill but the selection of all season, high performance tires are slim and expensive. Has anyone found a good 235/50/17 tire at a decent price (under $140 per).

Also am I the only one who's ever considered running 225/55/17s? I am starting to think that the Falken 512s with the slightly larger profile would give me better ride I want, not hurt the handling too much but save some serious coin over 235/50/17s.

Any thoughts?

I am runnin 225-55-17 Continental Premier Touring. Great tire. Great warranty, free road hazard for a year, 30 day trial....if you don't like them, they will give you a different Conti set. Just make sure you balance them to 1.4 oz.

Being not the stock size, they will give you 2mph error on your speedo. You will be going 2mph FASTER then it shows. Also, if you are running one of thoze oversized Mobil Oil filters (really big one), it might rub. Otherwise nice ride on the highway, snow, etc..

What's the difference when it comes to handling and do they seem to protect the rims any better than stock?

Is anyone running 245/50/17? Dunlop has the SP Sport 5000 Symmetrical for $141 which is noticeably less than any of the 235/50s out there and according to the Dunlop site it is approved for a 7" rim. Would these rub or would the stoppers that make my turning radius crap actually help me with these tires? Anyone with any thoughts?
