Michelin Pilot Sport A/S..good price?
Hi,
I just got a quote from a place where I get my tires all the time. Its not a fancy schmancy place but all they do are tires. No alignments, no shocks, just tires. Been going there for a while. Got a quote on Michelin Pilot Sports A/S for $213.00 each. This includes the balance/mount, valve, and tire disposal. Is this a good deal?
Thanks!
Andy

I really don't give a rats-a$$ about a few bucks one way or the other. I performed the due diligence and bought exactly what I wanted for my objectives, driving style and needs (GLE here, went from OEM 215/55-17's to 225/50-17's in my case). I had mine installed at a local Sears on 10/26/03 under a "$100.00 customer appreciation deal." Follows are the details:
4 225/50Z-17: 879.96 (219.99 ea)
4 Chrome valve stems for the price of rubber stems: 11.96
4 Local disposal of the replaced EL42's 8.00
4 Balance, special App: 51.96
Tax: 53.31
Out-the-door total: 1005.19
Torque Spec'd to YLW/72-87 with 2 free rotations. After the initial install I put ~105 miles on them, went back and had them te-torqued to spec the same day.
Note 1: There are less expensive, high quality options "out there" but that is a decision you will need to make. For me, this was the only tire I was going to buy.
Note 2: Needed roughly 500 miles to "cure" and they seemed "come into there own" at roughly 1000 miles (braking, drifting, tramlining, etc.)
Note 3: Currently running 35/34 psi F/R after ~2500 miles (I tweak on occasion but have settled here for my use).
I read posts/complaints here on occasion re: "noise and price." Not an issue for me on my GLE but who knows what 10K, 15K, 30K, etc. of wear/use may bring? I purchased with the expectation of getting ~30 to 40K miles then I'll move on. As far as the price issue, I'll leave that one alone and simply say; "if I needed tires today I would have zero reservations about making the exact the same purchase." I needed a high-end AS performance tire for the climate I live in, have driven these tires in many diverse weather/road conditions and I never think twice about what's "between my a$$ and the road" when in my Max.
Couple pics of 225/50's on stock GLE rims for reference (intentionally running the lower 32psi here):
