Looking for new rims please give me your expertise.
Looking for new rims please give me your expertise.
I have a black on black 1996 I30. I would like to get new rims and tires, but I don't know much about rims. I think that I would like to get a shiny rim but not necessarily Chrome. I think I would liket to put 17in on the car as well.
I LOVE the BMW rims with the DEEP lip on them, so I would like to get as close to that look as possible.
Can you guys give me your expertise on rims and give me some brands that are knows for quality, BUT will not break the bank?
Also, please let me know exactly what size 17's and offset I need to get that will be bolt on and go.
Thanks for your help everyone. I am basically looking for a QUALITY rim for the LEAST amount of money I can spend.
Have a great day!

Would this fit my car?

One thing I would recommend is that you purchase at least 18's if you are buying wheels with a lip. A lip usually takes 1-2" off the perceived height of the wheel, so if you buy 17's with a lip it'll look like you have 16's, which looks pretty silly IMHO. At the most recent 3rd gen meet, a fellow black 3rd gen had some 18's with a lip and I assumed they were 17's until I saw the size of the tires.
If I'm not mistaken, the recommended offset for Max/I30 is between 35-40mm. I'm guessing wheel spacers will accomodate the 42mm rims you linked to above.
I personally like all silver, or all black rims, but not the black w/silver lip. Of course, it's a personal choice thing.
As you said, I like a high polished/machined finish rim, as opposed to a full on chrome. Depends on your bling factor I suppose.
ADR, American Racing, Motegi are good places to look for starters.

Cool thanks for your help on this guys.
If anyone else can help me as well, I would appreciate it. To be honest with you, I don't even know what the offset is or means. lol i really don't know anything about rims. I just know what I like looks wise.

Easiest way to grasp offset is to imagine putting the wheel on the car. The higher the offset, the farther into the wheel well the "left" side of the rim will be pushed (if you are looking at the tirerack picture). Since the strut housing is there, if the offset is too high the rim will rub against the strut housing, which isn't good.
Ohhh, I think I get it. It is basically how wide the rim and tire are???
So can you get rims and tires that are wider than the original stock ones? Of course if you can there will be a limit before they start rubbing, but can you do that? Until now, I was thinking that all rims were the same width.
God I need help with this lol.

I think a smooth ride is more dependent on your shocks/struts. Factory being your quietest and smoothest. Tires contribute to a lesser degree, but definitely contribute.
One consideration with rims is their weight. Many, who like to get the fastest possible ride, will pay out the **** for a lighter rim. Sorry. Will look to find a rim that is light in weight, and preferrably lighter than stock.
Looks wise, I think 18" is enough. Again, personal choice. I like 17's myself.

I was thinking 17's originally. I dont want a tire that is so thin that I have to replace them every year ya know? If I get 18's wont the tires be very thin? how often would I have to replace them if I am a daily driver every day?
Sorry about that, i thought you might have knowledge of the brands. here are some links to the above mentioned rims.

I guess I am not asking if you guys like the rims I am posting, but rather if you know if they are well made and will last me for a long time.
Thanks again everyone.

Rims generally don't fall apart. At least I've never heard of a bad rap regarding build quality of any of the rims. Not the ones the major chains like Tirerack, 1010 Tires, or Whalen sell anyway. At the very least, you have a warranty if there's a problem.
I'd work within your budget, then narrow it down to what you like.
I gave some of my wheel manufacturer preferences higher up in this thread.
Make sure you confirm with whomever you buy from that they will fit your car.
Preferably you could buy locally and see them first hand.

Ok, that sounds good. Have you heard of www.wheelsnext.com before? i have not, but I stumbled on it today while doing some research on Rims.
Can I get your personal opinion? I have a BLACK on BLACK Infiniti I30. What do you think of the rim below? The more I look at it the more I like it...

I'd say go with a set of HP Racing Evos. They have a nice deep lip and 18s are only about $1000 shipped with tires. Now if it was me since you have a black on black car i'd have the centers powdercoated gloss black...leave the lip polished your about half way to having a SICK car.
Thanks Hamy. I will check those rims you mentioned and see what I can do. Are the 18in in those rims a bolt on an play thing or do I need to do any mods or whatever? I am looking for a rim that comes to me in the mail balanced with tires on, that I take out of the box, jack up the car, bolt them on, and drive around town shoing them off.
You should verify any concern with whomever you buy them from. Just ask them if they are balanced, I'm sure they will be if ordering with tires on them, but if you don't ask...
Those tires you linked to are nice, but mang, they eez espensive.

Don't ever get any rims made by AT, cheap rims, my friend had them in 16", bent them over the smallest bump.
Want a nice high quality strong light hyperblack rim? Look into the Enkei RPM2. Had them in 18" on my car for almost a month, live in NYC. Let me put it this way, these are some strong *** 18s!! Lightweight (19 lbs) and reasonably priced too, paid about 245 each rims from www.tires.com (I think they stopped selling them though). Def. recommend these rims.
