If money isn't a problem, get the Michelin Pilot Sports. Otherwise, get the Falken's. I have them and they're Grrrreat!

Here's the best place to get them for the best price.
I wish I would've known when I got mine. I paid alot more.

does that size differ from the 225/50's much...or does it just about even out to be the same?

It's almost exactly the same

Also the BFGoodrich Traction T/A 235/45R17 are also good tires. Only have about 150 miles on them. These are soo much better than the OEM tires.

They are 2% smaller or about 1/2 inch shorter, within specs.

Funny, I just logged in tonight to see what I can find about other people's tires. I need some too. Here is my list...

First pick on top:
235/45/17

Mich. Pilot Sport A/S $192/ea (tirerack)
Pirelli Pzero Nero $122/ea (Tirerack)
Yokahama AVS dB S2 $144/ea (Tirerack)
Dunlop SP Sport 5000 $144/ea (tirerack)
Falken Ziex ZE 512 $102/ea (Tirerack) Found to be better price at Vulcan $89
Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 $105/ea (Summer tires?) (Tiresdirect.com)

So please provide input. I will pay the high price for the Mich. but if there is a comparable tire listed (I know the pirelli is) then I will save a couple hundered.

Any input?

I put on the Falken Ziex 512s just a year ago now. The standard size, 225/50/17. I got them from Discount Tire. Their price was good but they shipped to my home (c.c. billing address) instead of the service station that I asked them to ship to.

They are good tires. They are vastly better in wet and snow conditions than the Potenzas (not too difficult) although because of the width I do still see occasional hydroplaning in heavy rain on interstates, but at ~15 mph faster than the Potenzas. (You can at least keep up with traffic.) No all-season tires are really going to replace snow tires but they are OK in snow if you have reasonable expectations and drive carefully. I would say they are fine for the usual urban/suburban conditions but if you are planning on attacking mountain roads in the snow you need dedicated snow tires. The Falkens are not particularly quiet - about the same or marginally louder than the Potenzas, but acceptable. I could not detect that they feel any different from the Potenzas on dry roads - maybe if you drove two cars back-to-back on the same road you could tell a difference but I don't think it would be pronounced.

I had them installed at a normally-reliable service station in my area. However these are directional tires and one was installed backward. (which they fixed the next day, quite embarrassed about it.) They also pressurized them to the maximum pressure on the sidewall - 44 psi. When I picked up the car my first impression was of a much harsher ride than the Potenzas, actually unpleasant, but after I adjusted the pressure they were OK - but that's why I never got the chance to do a direct comparo with the Potenzas. So, check your pressures and check the rotation directions after you have them installed.

I can say Michelin is better tires compared to most of them. Haven't had any exp w/ Kumho and Dunlop though

If it's all-season high performance tires you need:

Low cost: Sumitomo HTR+

Moderate Cost: Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S

High Cost: Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season

There is little doubt that the Pilots are probably the best all season tire out there for the Max. The question is: Are they worth the extra cost? In my worthless opinion, I do not think so. I went with the Falken 512's. So far so good. I have not drove them in rain or snow yet, so I cannot comment on anything other than dry conditions. I do like them though. My decisions were limited because I have a GLE. You SE owners think you have few options, try getting a tire within safey specs of a 215/55/17. I could only go up to the 225/50/17, so it was the Falkens, Pilots, or the OEM Turanzas. If I had a SE and with all of the research I have done, I would have probably went with the Pirelli Nero's, Continental ContiExtreme Contacts, or the Falkens. The way I look at it is, anything will be better than stock tires in adverse conditions.
Just my 2 pennies.

I did Kumho ECSTA KH11 with the stock 225/50/17. They are great for the price. I am very happy with them.

Well, after adding my list, I looked up the Toyo Proxes 4. Very nice tire. Does anyone else have experience with these tired other than SR20-Turbo???

They are a bit harder to find and Edge does seem to have the best price. I think these might be a good choice... Right now I have narrowed it down to the Toyos, Pirelli, and the Falkens. I have Mich. Pilot Sport on my VW (NON A/S) and they are awesome, but the cost is the question. For a summer tire, oh yes, but for my all season tire... I think I am going to save a few bux.

Bridgestone LS-H or LS-Z series. They are one of the best for overall performance tires in the market, IMO. FYI: I had logged more than 44K on the LS-H series tires and they are still performed admirably! They should last me atleast another 15K or more.

I heard Falken 512's are on back order for 5-6 month/weeks. So, it may not be a option.

Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S. Read the tirerack reviews on the this badazz.

DO NOT GET NITTO 555's. They suck. Hot dry traction is good but not great and wet traction is BAD (still not a bad as the slippery-when-wet "grab your ballz, you is about to die" Craptenzas). The Nittos ride quality is great and sidewall stiffness is just right but this is NOT a performance tire and NOT a wet conditions or winter weather tire.

I will be buying the Pirellis ASAP. I have heard that Falkens ride smooth but the tradeoff is a soft sidewall.

Hehe... I have these on my SE-R and LOVE them. I'm on my second set now. I put the first set on and I think it was the second winter I had them on, I pushed about 12 inches of snow up a hill! There was a freak snowfall in late March in NJ and it caught everyone off guard. I was at work in the city figuring it wouldn't stick out by my parents' but it did - 12 inches! They live on a pretty good-sized hill and the car pushed all the snow right up the hill. The car gave out before the tires did (so much snow got pushed up into the engine bay that the intake temp sensor froze and the car stalled!) All my friends bust my chops because I call them supertires. But they are! Great in the snow, wet, dry... all-around. Being somewhat careful they lasted me 2.5 years or so probably 35-40k miles. I'd highly recommend these! Think I'll get them on my fiancee's car when she's ready to shed the potenzas. I haven't had TOO much trouble with them but we'll see when the winter comes

I think I have chosen the Proxes... I like the pattern and the cost. Even if they only last 2 years they are half the price of the tire I really want. In the spring I am going to 19s on summer sports so, the stock rollers will just need to be good in colder weather.

check out these reviews...

the Falkens did "ok", the Potenza's did horribly, and the Pilot Sport A/S underperformed (not even including the high price) the guy at National Tire and Battery even said that Michelin was having problems with the Pilot Sport A/S

check out these reviews from people who have owned the particular tire on 1010tires.com. I ended up going with the Toyo Proxes 4.

I have Kuhmo Ecsta 712s. I love them. They have really good traction. Even when it is wet, they hook up good cornering and I've never had them hydroplane. The only bad part is they slide on wet pavement slowing down. They hook up fine accelterating but don't do any hard stops on wet pavement.

I just picked up a set of proxes from edgeracing.com $460 shipped. Will be here next week. Not a bad deal since every local shop here has at least $60 more per tire.
