what size tire on 17"x7"

Hey guys I just bought a set of 17"x7" wheels. My question is what size tire do you recommend? I was thinking about 235/45/17. Let me know your thoughts.

The general consensus is that you shouldn't go wider than a 225/45 on 7" width, but lots of people have done that anyway and haven't had a problem.

For aftermarket wheels, Tirerack recommends 235/45/17.
Many guys run 235/45/17 but for our OEM 17" wheels, stock size is 225/50/17.

I've been wondering this too, since I might be getting some daily driver 17x7. On 225/45/19 the tread would be way too narrow, and then the stock 225/50/19 has a huge sidewall. So I'm thinking 235/45/19 is the widest you can go and closest to in spec. Have alot of guys on here run that size on OEM and/or aftermarket 17x7 rims? (I'm referring to 02-03 SE's of course)

I purchased 235/45/17s for the OEM rims. I had to since the tires I wanted were not made in the original size, 225/50/17. These tires are almost exactly the same height as the OEM and the fit on the rim is fine.

I went with 235.45.17 . . no problems, they are almost identical to the stock diameter so the speedo isint off.

Strictly speaking, 235/45's should not be mounted on wheels narrower than 7.5". That's per tire industry standard tables, which have been developed in the absence of all direct profit motives, so that's a much more reliable reference than any entity that sells tires.

Rim width vs tire size is a somewhat fuzzy criteria, and actual tire dimensions (which vary among different make/modeltires of nominally the same size) have some effect. I understand fully that being half an inch out of spec isn't a guarantee that failures will occur, but one must understand that the anecdotal experience of those who have put 235/45's on the OE 17's represents nothing more than just that. That it's 'seat of the pants' experience under uncontrolled and unspecified conditions, which doesn't count for much as far as rigid testing procedures go. That's a rather weak basis, and I don't think it's good enough evidence to make similar recommendations to others without attaching a few disclaimers (which I don't generally see, BTW).

Triple8sol - if anything, the tread on a 225/45-xx is a bit wider than the tread on a 225/50-xx. And 7" is the narrow bound of acceptability for 225/45 in any diameter that I can recall OTOMH.
