As far as ride quality, how big of a differance does rim size play. I don't plan to buy anything over 19".

well upgrading from 17's to 18's made a huge difference, i bet with 19;s it would be even better, but the roads here prevent and my budget me from getting 19's

If you can afford 19's, do it. Looks so much better than 18's. I don't think there would be much of a difference in ride quality between the two.

I dont think it will be a reallly noticable difference... when I got my 19's it didnt feel that bad at all thought it would be much worse...to me it felt the same since after i put my JIC's in. It will probably feel softer once i switch back from the winter. It doenst bother me at all.

Just so I'm clear, you're saying that the ride quality got better when you went from 17" to 18", right?

No. The ride gets worse the bigger you go, plus you have to go on PP (Pothole Patrol).

Clueless on the subject here, why does it get worse the bigger you go? Shouldn't it be smoother, b/c the wheel is bigger so it doesnt drop into small ruts and stuff?

The overall TIRE diameter is virtually the same from 17"-19" wheels. With 19" wheels vs. 17" wheels, there is less tire between the road and your wheel...so you feel a lot more of the bumps. And if you hit a large pot hole, you may damage a 19" wheel.

I went from 15 inch to 18 inch rims. I compared the two wheels and the radius is almost the same. The 18 inchers raised the car but once I go over a pothole, it hits harder. Maybe because of the heavier rims.

But I gotta tell you, 18" rims are syck. They sit on medium profile tires. I will take pics later.

18 or 19 dont matter as long as your side wall is 40 ! usually people with 18 go for a side wall of 40 and people with 19 go for a side wall of 30/35 stay with 40 on a 19 youll be good, i liek to have 19's with a side wall of 40 becasue im dropped but the 19's and the 40 side wall keep me higher so i dont hit while going down my drive way and the drop i have plus the big rims cover up all gap between the fender and wheel , as far as ride SAME !

the difference between 18's and 19's are not that much let just say you run a 235-40-18 falken fk451 the overall tire diameter is 25.4, if you bumped up to a 19 in the same tire the overall diameter is 25.6 in a 235-35-19. The tire itself is smaller being a 35 series tire but the diameter is farely close. If you put a minor drop you could always run the 245-40-19 fk451 and the overall tire diameter for those are 26.9 taller tire but more cushion, the overall diameter for an oem tire size for 5th gens in the falken 512 is 26.1....Sorry to rant im just here at work at Falken bored out of my mind...

Def go with at least 40 sidewalls. I have had both 18's and 19's on my 2000 Max and i really didnt feel any difference between them.
My 18's were alot heavier though, and i would def feel bumps and Potholes alot more. 19's i think look alot better!!

I like my 19s. In NYC the roads are crappy so you have to be careful with your rims. I've hit some really bad roadwork/potholes around here. Some so bad that I've pulled over and expected to see some dented hunks of metal, but nope, these AXIS HIROS are strong, and I'm running 35 aspect ratio tires. I love the ride, its not harsh at all. The H&R/Illuminas help to smooth it out.

But like another poster said, you have to be on constant pothole patrol.

Performance is a bif priority for me being supercharged, How much are 19's going to slow me down over 18's. I know there was an equation for equating the rotating mass to dead weight. i elieve for 18's it was like every pound equaled 8lbs. of dead weight. Is it going to drastically increase with 19's, cause i think they look so dam good.

19's seem like they're the only one worthwhile...

i pothole patrol NOW and i'm on stocks i've already bent one rim and i've never hit a curb. I do drive through a lot of construction areas pretty fast though...

Thanks guys, I'll take it all into consideration, but I will most likely go with 18s droped because my driving does not allow for a lot of pp.

And to others...40 on a 19 doesn't look right to me. 35 looks better. But we all have differnet criteria for getting what we get so I guess it doesn't matter.

And to answer the original question, go with 18x8 or 8.5" wheels, and 245/40/18 tires.
You're going a completely different route to compensate for that...and I thought you had 18"? Maybe just a typo?

Anyway, what about someone who goes 235/35/19 vs. 235/40/19? It's 3.2 vs. 3.5, not a huge difference, but a difference none the less.

I went form a 15 to 19 and didn't notice any difference ride quality but we have pretty much perfect roads here. If you are going for performance and looks stick with the 18s. IF you are going for looks only go with the 19s. My 19s are heavy and I really noticed a differnce in acceleration. I guess you could say I am completely posing.
I have 245 35 19s.
I always find that in real life the wheels look way biger than they do in pics soI thik 18s do look good live but not as good in pics. Just my $0.02 though

You could probably sneak away with getting a 19" wheel and not sacrifice much performance. Brands like RH Evolution, GFG, etc make larger diameter wheels that are lightweight forged aluminum. But from my experience, it all depends on the set up of the wheel (1-piece, 2-piece, forged, etc), the material the rims are made out of, and of course if its chromed or not. No matter what type wheel you buy, chrome will make it heavier. (since chrome is no more than 3-4 layers of liquid metals).

I say, if you can afford 19's go with them. Thats the route I am going in the next few months.

Yup. except go with 19x8 or 19x8.5 and 245/35/19 tires.
