I purchased and installed a set of 225-50-17 AVON Tech M500 tires on my 03 Max SE. I am very happy after the first 200 miles i put on them.
First, they were $125/each + shipping from Tirerack.
Second, these tires are really wide and look awasome on the Maxima, especially on the rear axle.
Third, these tires stick to the road like crazy. The car is planted and safe - always. They stick great in both dry and wet.
High speed stability is as good as it can get.
They are labeled "Summer tires" and many people here will say that this will be an issue for them. I have no idea if these tires are even close to adequate in any snow conditions. I have a pair of new 16" snow tires/wheels in the garage that i am planning to use during ski trips.
And just to compare the Avon tires to something..... obviously the Potenza's were far far worse in wet or dry. They were skinnier, noisier and less responsive.....and forget wet handling.
I have a pair of Michelin Pilots A/S as well....and i compared them to both - the Avons and Craptenzas ....and all i have to say is..... Pilot A/S are very responsive tires, extremelly well handling but not better than the Avons in dry or wet. (so far)
However, Pilot A/S are very very noisy after only 9-10k easy miles on them. Avon tires are really silent compared to the Pilots. It's that obvious. I think that even my 50k miles old Craptensas were making less noise than these almost new Pilots. I will not buy Pilot A/S again, even though the handling with them is exemplary. In my opinion, $200 is too much money for all that noise....increasing noise.
To summarize,....if you need a great, affordable, 3 season tire that looks and feels like a true performance tire - take a good look at the Avon Tech M500.
For those who don't know it.... Avon tyres are a well established name in Europe. These are no "no-name" rubber you can get from Ebay. They were promoted in the USA less than a year ago by tirerack.
I will keep you updated as i put more miles on my car. Winter is comming and the rain will start pouring in N. California. I drive a lot so i will have enough opportunities to test the limits of these new tires.
