TIRES...what to buy?

Ok so i'm on my second set of RE92's Potenzas for my 01' I30t....and well they LOOK nice, but damn do they wear down quickly... Wet traction is horrible... well im just telling you guys everything you already know lol. I am going to the tire shop on tuesday and going to get a set replaced, because they're only 12,000 into the 30,000 guaranteed rating. I know they'll probably replace them with the same thing, but if I have the option I want to replace them all with something better. I am not going to risk my car with the upcoming wet months to those horrible, and overpriced tires. Sears quoted me $1154 installed on a new set of those same tires...what a rip! I want something with better traction and price.... Someone give me some suggestions please! Thanks in advance.

PS: Can I put 225/17/45s on instead of 225/17/50s? There are so many more to choose from in the thinner category, and I do like the lowe profile.

I'm big on Yokohama's, but my mom's Acura has Toyo tires and they are pretty nice too.

The only tires I've ever had on my car are Yokohama all season/weather tires, and I've been pretty happy with them. My old car had Potenzas as well (and I agree, they were no good) and then I got a free set of Goodyear's. I sold the car about 3 weeks later, but the new owner said the tires are still in good shape. I don't know if any of that helps, but good luck anyway.

225/45/17 is going to be a little thin. Lots of people put on 235/45/17 without issue, though it is out of spec and will have ever-so-slightly less sidewall than the 225/50.

I was in your position up until about a week ago. I just got new tires...and after much debating I went with 225/50/17 again. I'm glad I did.

You'll find that all-season selection in 225/50/17 is fairly slim. Most folks here put on Falken 512s on as a cost effective 225/50/17 all-season tire. Though some have had problems getting them to balance right. I actually went with Toyo Proxes TPT performance all-season tires. I'm pretty happy. They're comfortable, have good wet traction, 400 treadwear rating, and am hoping will handle cold weather conditions better than my previous Kumho KH11 summer tires (if only they had an all-season! they were great except in that respect). Even better, the Toyos were only $129/tire at www.tiresavings.com.

Good luck, don't get RE92s again, and you'll probably get better responses in the more appropriate Tires and Wheels forum.

I intend to get the Kumha ECSTA ASX 235/45-17 SL
Blackwall WR Speed Rated Price Each: $92

Sound good? Tire rack seems to have a good price, and i dont want to bust my wallet on a set of tires as expensive as the RE92's at about $249 each.... I just want good traction, cheap price, and decent relaibility. The ratings on tirerack for these tires have been excellent. So the slightly wider tire will fit on the OE wheels just fine? Thanks. I'll order asap if you guys concur.

Like I said, Tires and Wheels forum would be more appropriate for this question. I love Kumho tires, and would have gotten the ASXs if they had the proper size. If you call Tire Rack, tell them what car you have and then say you want the ASXs, if they look on their computer and see you have a 7" wide wheel they'll tell you that 235/45/17 are out of spec for your car. They require at least a 7.5" wide wheel. Many people go ahead and do the 235/45/17 anyway, though you may want to investigate it further yourself before you make that leap.
