Offset q's?

I am clueless as to how offsets work when it comes to wheels. What is the offset of the factory wheel? How wide are they?What is the offset? What is the most offset you can put on the Max. I just ordered a set of 20's with a 40mm offset I believe. I dont understand how all this works. Please giveme as much info as you possibly can on this "OFFSET" thread.
