225/55/17 means order declined from Tirerack
225/55/17 means order declined from Tirerack
Here is the stoy;
I ordered a set of 225/55/17 tires from tirerack, since my gle stock size tires were 215/55/17 i didnt think it was going to be a big deal. Half an hour after i finished with my order i got a call from Tirerack saying that if i put these tires on my Max that my warranty for Engine and Transmission will be denied, since the Max is not designed for that size. The reason is that it will cause excess wear on my Engine, Transmission, brakes, and i will lose out on performance (acceleration, handling, hard cornering). After this conversation i decided to cancel my order since so many negative effects would occur. Anyone has any comments feel free

Thats what they said, btw if you decide to order those tires they will not honor warranty since it wont be the exact spec for your vechile. They told me if anything went wrong with any of the tires that nothing would be done about it.
So just don't deal with the warranty issue. Tires.com probably would deny a claim afterwards instead of being up front about it.
I'm toying with the idea of a 265/45/16 myself. I'll report back if they freak.

Why are you guys railing TireRack for selling tires that are either not approved for 7" rims (ala the 235/45s) or tires will make your speedo error exceed the recommended maximum error of 3% as will the 225/55's which will give you approximately a 3.5% speedo error?
Seems like a case of the birds shooting at the hunters or the blind trying to argue colors with folks who have 20/20 vision, does'nt it?
If you are bent on doing these things, I wont stop you, but dont rant on Tirerack because they are doing things by the book and you are'nt.

using tire calculator, i get:
215/55/17 vrs 225/55/17
Speedometer Difference: 1.632% too slow Diameter Difference: 1.61%
this was the same mini upsize i was going to use on my 03 gle, since this was the
closest size i could find the traction ta's. seems well under the 3.0%, no?
galo, where do you get 3.5%?

there is an easy fix for your problem..... order the tires and do not list a car.... then they will charge you and ship your tires...... just don't expect any extra help if you call back *****'n ... they don't fit ect...... when you list a car they are required to advise/inform you of the correct size/load rating/speed rating/ect.... it just makes sense.... what if you just wrote down the wrong size.... think about it they deal with everyone form the car guys to soccer moms
I;m basing my calculations on the diameter of the stock 225/50/17 Potenza RE92 and all the other data from the Tirerack web site. Figures below:
Potenza RE92 225/50/17 Diameter = 25.9"
Yokohama Avid H4 225/55/17 diameter = 26.8"
.9"/25.9" = 3.47% speedo error
Turanza LSV 225/55/17 Diameter = 26.9"
1"/25.9" = 3.86% speedo error
Michelin Pilot A/S's 225/55/17 diameter = 27.1"
1.2"/25.9" = 4.42% speedo error
Any other suggestions for me to check my math?

The tire sizes in question originally were the stock 215-55-17 and what he wanted which was 225-55-17... a 1.6% error. The size he says they recommended him, 225-50-17 is a larger error... 1.7%.
I ended up going with 235/50/17. They are wider and are almost the same specs as the stock 215/55/17 tire size. I guess i could of ordered the 225/55 but i just didnt feel like dealing with any little problems and the fact that i didnt know any 5gen with that tire size just made my decision even quicker.
I'm getting ready to get new tires. NTB's book shows 235/45/17's fit fine on my 02 Max. SE 17" x 7" rims, and he even called Tire Rack on speaker phone. Long story short, they just didn't see real harm but T/R guy couldn't recommend it from his company. Said if NTB's book showed this, then it should be ok. Might just order Toyo TPT's in 225/50/17 though and stay OEM size.
