Proper PSI for 17s? My mechanic said about 25 PSI

I've read numerous times here that around 32-35 psi was correct for 17 inch wheels. I brought to my mechanic today and he said he'd recommend dropping the psi to about 25-28 because the ride was really harsh and the tires were showing extra wear in the center. He said for a low profile tire you should have less psi than for a normal one. Anyone have any comments?

Your mechanic is either an idiot or was talking about 17 inch mudders. FYI, my 01's center console sticker states 32 psi all around for the OEM 17s. I rather have a bubble on the tires than a bent rim.

damn fine mechanic....NOT!
this dolt obviously drives a roadmaster & thinks everyone should have a ride like his.
you're correct - run 32-35 depending on your rubber, & get a new mechanic, shesh Wmart tire boys are smarter than tis!

What everyone also stated your mechanic is a fool for making the statement that he did. When i went to ganintire with my friend to buy tires i asked if pumping up the tires an extra couple of psi is bad or good. He told me that although the ride will be harsher it will be better in terms of handling, gas milage, road feel, and extends the life of the tire. He also pointed out the story with Firestone and the Explorers and he said one of the main reason why the tires were bursting and people were getting killed was because they wanted to make the ride so soft that the PSI was told to be under 28.

i run 36psi on my conti's. i had it drop to 25psi once and it felt like i was ridding on birthday ballons.

and if you should have it set at 25psi, then why does a tire pressure monitoring system trigger an alarm at 25psi?

let me answer my own question... because it is low!!!
