Rim Width Question...

This may be a dumb question, but whats the best way to find out how wide my rims are? I've had mine on my car so long that I dont remember from when I bought them. I am looking to get new rims and dont want to have to get new tires for them. Also, if they end up being 7.5in wide, do I have to buy new tires for 8's?

try asking in the wheel/tire forum. id give the simple answer of try and measure urself. and yes if tires are a half inch bigger they obviously arent going to fit right.

for a 2001 AE SE, i believe the wheels that came with it are 17 x 7 w/ 225-50 tires. 225mm tires will fit as much as 8" wide wheels. in retrospect, wheels ranging from 7" to 8" will fit in a 225mm wide tire.

So I'll be cool since I have 225/35/19's right now?

do you still have the receipt for the wheels? i would hope that 19 wheels were not 7.5 and were at least 8" wide. after you find the size, you may want to check out tirerack.com so you can see which tire size is in spec for each sized wheel.

my previous comment was under the assumption that you are on stock 17 x 7 tire.

if you're running 225s on 19 x 7..its marginal. if your rim width is 7.5 or 8, the recommended tire to run is 245/35. keep in mind that 225s have different load ratings than 235s and 245s. you need to even out the load on all your wheels and upgraded wider tires will help. with the maxima as heavy as it is, load ratings and proper width is necessary. with the proper size, you'll also avoid any speedometer errors to a minimum.

I just measured with a tape measure and got 8inches, so unless my measuring is off, they are 19x8 right now. I will try going to tirerack and checking.

I just checked the specs on the tires I have and it says the max load is 1235 lbs, but it says the tires are fine for 8inch width rims...What is the load weight?

different tires have different load ratings. the wider tires will give you more contact patch and stability.

So if i'm not worried about hard turning, therefore stability, then will my current tires prolly be cool? I really prefer drag/street racing. However, if I did get new tires for the 19x8's i'm getting, what would be the best for me?

its ok for what you're using it for now. definitely recommend to upgrade your tires. the recommended is 245/35, the brand is up to you. if you prefer the drag scene, a wider tire definitely would help (definitely need to consider stickies). if you're into "street racing," its all about suspension and tire selection and of course the driver. i highly advise not to do this "street racing" thing, your boat is not made for that.
