can someone explain an "offset" for our rims?

im new at this rim stuff but is an offset for deep the face of the rim is? If so what are the offsets thatll fit our cars? i see that people have a 35 offset or a 40. which one is deeper? If its too deep then it wont clear the brakes, correct?

Offset is the distance the wheel is from the hub of the car. Usually, this will tell you how far the wheel sits from the fender once mounted. Also, it will tell you how far it's away or near the suspension components of the car is relatively most important when determining the right offset number for our cars. Usually, a lower offset is better for our front wheel drive cars, but other determining factors must be also considered, such as rim size and width size too.
