I just took my 04 Max to the stealership for its 30k checkup (I trust them more than the other joints in the area). And they're saying that they can't do the road force balance on one of the wheels because it's slightly bent. I think they're smoking crack.

Question: Do you know of a fast way to find out if its bent?

did they dismount the tire and look at it carefully usually the rims gets bent in the back so try and jack it up a little and get behind there and check it out

freezerboy3 - bent rims would probably fall under excessive wear & tear - and not be covered by warranty. BTW does anyone know if wheel alignment is covered?

 

If it is a manufactures defect on the rim, it should be covered under warranty, If you hit a bump, pothole, curb etc, than sorry, Your dime to fix...

 

chern - I had two bent rims. You will have to watch them on the balancer. You will be able to easily tell if and where they are bent. I replaced my two with replicas from Lakeshore Wheel and Tire. Good stuff.

 

Did you mean you purchased replica OEM rims? How much do those run compared to Stealerships bought or people on Ebay offloading their stock???

 

I guess that shouldn't have been directed at you...anyway, they were $225 a piece I think. The reason I went with them was the fact that they are NEW and not likely to be bent. I am skeptical of the "one rim" deals on ebay. How did you end up with only 1 rim to sell? I actually had a Michelin Pilot Sport A/S running on a replica rim with no weights in perfect balance. Stealerships are $500+.

No warranty for bent wheels are offered by any car dealership. The new 245/45R18 low pro tire has never come oe on any Nissan Maxima in previous years and the dealers are not even aware of how a lesser tire pressure of 32 PSI - 35PSI can have a severe effect on possible wheel damage from low tire pressure on normal driving conditions. Alignments only have a Customer Goodwill Concession of 6,000 miles/6 months. ADVICE: Ask for the Road Force Balance print-out spec chart it will show that if the tire was in fact truly balanced then the road force would fall below 28LBS. this is tolerance. If the dealer failed to index tire to fluctuate Road Force Balance LBS. ,then they may not even know how to operate their own machine. The true tell readings from wheel on balancer w/o tire mounted on wheel is the only TRUE identifier of an out-of-round / bent wheel. Of course the tire professionals will also have a run-out gauge. Most dealerships don't have that.

 

REMEMBER PROPER TIRE PRESSURE IS NO LESS THAN 32 PSI NO MORE THAN 35 PSI . TOO MANY VEHICLES COME IN FOR SERVICE AND LEAVE SERVICE WITH 17 PSI - 25 PSI , NOT GOOD. THIS WILL EVENTUALLY CAUSE TIRE FAILURE AND POSSIBLE WHEEL DAMAGE

 

I've been running my SE tires at 32 psi (check them every 3 months) and find that by then they are down to about 29 psi. I have over 31 K miles on them and the tread wear they show seems to indicate they have been run at slightly too high a pressure. The center of the tread has slightly more wear than the edges. I will be replacing these original Good Years soon with Michelins and want to be certain I have the correct pressure. Any advice?

 

Had this problem with the tire pressure. Took the tire over to a junk yard mechanic to have it patched. The air was leaking out around the edge of the rim. When he took the tire off the inside part of the rim was pitting in 4 or 5 different spots. It looks like it is disinegrating. I am in the process of getting 4 new rims from Nissan under warranty Have someone check yours out. P.S. I have the chrome rims.
