Lug nuts: open vs closed

What's the difference between open ended and closed lug nuts, which are better for aftermarket rims?

Open ended:

Personally, I like the open lugnuts, because you can run longer wheel-studs, and insert spacers to adjust track-width for a wider stance at the track, and then remove them when you don't want them for street (wide track and wide tires make the car VERY sensitive to grooves in the road).

Agreed - 0pen give you more options. I suppose closed would look better and slow rain/snow from getting at the lug bolts some.

unless you are planning on upgrading to longer studs, closed lugs should be fine

I'm not planning on getting longer studs, it's just that the open-ended lugs pictured above are slightly cheaper and lighter.

$29.99 for Muteki open-ended - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...985662135&rd=1
$39.00 for closed - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33749

I have the closed-end. McGuard spline drives.

I didn't like the fact that the open-ended ones start to rust after a while. (especially the chrome ones)

It's not so much that the open ones rust but the studs do and it runs all over the lugs. Looks like crap, at least mine do. But due to the type of rims I have, open is my only option.

I live within walking distance from McGard. I cant believe they have such an awesome building and make so much money just by making lugs.

open ones are lighter = less unsprung weight

i have open ones and personally the stud rust is there and noticeable upon close inspection, but doens't really harm anything.

That's because they charge $70-100 for a set of lug nuts

That's not bad considering how much I had to pay for my Volk lugs
