rim width question...

Okay guys this might so really stupid...but I need the answer to it...

When you buy rims and it says on the sticker its a 7" wide or 8" wide etc...is it PHYSICALLY that wide? Cuz I remember before I put on my SSRs, I was fooling around with them and notice I measured 9.5" wide on the ruler...even though the sticker says 8.5"....the tire size I was getting was 245mm wide and when I lined it up with 9.5" wide, it is almost flush just like how my rims are right now on the car....

so is it true that whatever the sticker says...you take that number and add +1 inch to how wide it is to get the PHYSICAL width? Ex...a 9" wide rim on the sticker will mean a 10" wide rim on the ruler? sorry if this sounds stupid but I just thought of it right now...thanks!

if you buy 18x8 rims, you are getting rims 18" in diameter and 8" wide. When I measured all my rims, it was exactly what the sticker said

Alright I was able to get my hands on a stock WRX rim...check it out

Here it says it's 6.5 wide

Then I physically measure it with a ruler...it comes out to be 7.5 wide

whats up with that? not only are these WRX rims +1 inch...my SSRs were like that when I bought them brand new...all were measured with a ruler and came out to be +1 inch from what the sticker says....

wow...u need a new ruler...anywhoo...

to answer ur question...from what i see in ur picture i dont think they wanted to count the lip with it it.

from what i can tell from here, it clearly adds 1 full inch if u count the lips, but w/o them its 6.5 inches.

I don't think I need a new ruler...it reads completely fine

and the WRX rim doesn't come with a lip...besides it doesnt matter if a rim comes with a lip or not...it's still the part of the WIDTH of the rim....it's like saying a 12 inch wide deep dish rim with a 5 inch lip and that lip doesn't count so it brings it down to 7 inches wide?

You need to stay in teh school and learn something. The tires go on the mounting area of the rims, so measure it there!

i get calls like this all the time you DO NOT measure it from end to end measure from where the tire sits and judging from the pic its right. i hope you are not trying to put that WRX wheel on your car it wont work.

well I went to go measure it from where you guys said....it does come out to be 6.5 wide...but I still don't understand becuz I see owners putting 225s on a 6.5 wide stock rim...and that tire goes well over the edge of the rim...

my question is...how come they don't count it as part of the rim? even my tires go past those mounting areas and sits completely flush with my rim (245/40/18 on 8.5 wide)

The main focus is the bead of the tire where it actually sits an thats tucked in past the initial "lip" of the wheel. Although it give the illusion that its sitting flush with the wheel the inner part of it isnt.

Some pictures may help

The question's been answered already, but these links may be useful to those that com across the thread later, showing width measured across the mounting space, not counting the lip:
