Tread width and tire pressure for winter traction...
Just put my all-seasons back on for the slippery months... 205/65/15 Bridgestone Potenza G009s in front, Continental ContiExtremeContacts in back (my front Contis bubbled after a couple of insane potholes and I had to replace them in a hurry).
I'm not really liking the Bridgestones (same as the Contis in the wet but vague handling in the dry), so I was thinking of going to Falken Ziex ZE-512s or just back to ContiExtremeContacts. My question is this: If I run a wider tread width like 215 or 225, but with higher pressure (around 40psi), would my snow/slush traction be any better or worse than my 205 tires at 35psi?

Assuming you're not driving on a glacier, go w/ narrow tires to increase the ground pressures. The more pressure you have on ther road, the better the tires will grip in the snow.
OTOH, if you are going to go over glaciers, get the biggest low pressure baloon tires you can...
p.s. the 512s are a waste of money, even at $100 a pop.
