A question for Toyo Proxes 4 owners

It's time for me to get a new set of tires, currently i'm running on Pirelli PZero Nero M+S. They're awesome tires regardless of condition, however it tramlines quite a bit.

That said, have you guys (and gals) ever had tramlining problems with the 4's? If you could also post your profiles i'd appreciate it. I'm getting 245/45/17's by the way.

Thanks!
- Mike

I have the PRoxes 4 and love them, a tramlining answer is pretty subjective, yes they do, bad? no. I think any aggressive directional tire will do this to some degree, I can only speak from experience and I've never compared directly to PZero's but they tramline no worse than Conti's or Yok Avid's, I've had both of those as well ( Conti's briefly but very good in the rain)

BTW the stock replacement size is 235/45/17

Understood, though the PZN's get a lot of rap about tramlining (at least as far as Tirerack reviews are concerned) and i do feel it - it tugs the car quite bad. On narrow construction roads, this poses a problem.

Thanks for your comments

I figured the 'net could define it better than i could, so here goes

"...causes your front tires to follow ruts or longitudinal cracks in the road surface, forcing you to fight the steering wheel to keep the car going in the direction you wish. Tramlining is related to tire size and tread design. Some tires tramline very badly, and others not at all. High-performance, wide, low profile tires are often the worst. Tramlining can be reduced or eliminated by changing to a different tire design."

I have the proxies 4. They are a very good tire. I do not get Tramlining too much, but like Maxrb8 said, its going to vary a lot between tires.

Toyo doesnt make a proxes 4 in OEM 225/50/17 and I really want to stick to that size. I am considering their TPT touring tire, anyone know if these are good?

I got the proxe 4's, and i love them, and i will purchase them again if i keep my stock wheels on. I didnt get any tramlining in the beginning with full tread, but now im starting to feel it, but i think thats because im using my nitrous...

You don't have to match that size perfectly. I have Proxes 4 and there is no difference. So they're a little wider and have less sidewall? It doesn't bother me.

Based on the above definition, no tramlining here to speak of. At least no more than any other tires I've ridden on.

I thought that shorter sidewall = stiffer ride, less comfortable ride.

This is true however most people opt for the 235/45-17 which is out of spec for the OEM 7" rim. Some people are not comfortable with this. I realize that now a whole bunch of people with 235/45 tires are going to chime in and say they do it with no problems, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's 100% safe.

so if we get the 24/45/17 tires and there are rubbing issues, is that safer?

Are you saying that it also varies between tires of the same make and model?

How does having nitrous make the car tramline more than it does? Unless you're purposely spraying while going over the junctions, i don't see how this is connected.

How long have you had your Proxes and what size are you running?

Sort of, it just depends how bad the rubbing is and how often it happens - though if you can avoid it, don't even try that setup. It's not worth the trouble. Just a reminder, 245/45/17's is a bad size for OEM wheels. 235 is stretching it, 245 is just plain wrong.

My track tires are 245/45/17...but those are on a 17x8 wheel, not a 17x7 wheel. They will look like balloons on the stock rims, bulging out too far to the sides.

235/45/17 is a preferable replacement for the OEM rims if 225/50/17 is not available...

btw I use the Proxes 4 on my 18's (235/40/18) and tramlining is very minor only on very deep, long ruts.

Yes, I'm one of them. I haven't had a single problem. That's just me though.
