6th gens and big-lip rims...question

ok, i must admit that I love to drive cars but know very little about how they actually work. this realization has hit me, more than once, over the months i've owned my '06 SL. now, i've always wanted to get myself the type of rims you see a lot on the BMW 745Li's that have a really big chrome lip with black flat (not curved out) spokes.
after looking it seemed like i could do it if i could only spend $5000 on Asanti's or something like them. however, last place i went to, the guy told me something i didnt know (of course!), that because the 6th gen is a FWD, you can't physically have the same deep dish you have on a 745 and those other RWD cars. that kind of killed my hopes but seemed to make sense.

however, today i saw another white 6th gen (going on the opposite direction and i was late to school) with rims exactly what i had dreamt of from the beginning. except his were painted white to match his white car. they had a huge chrome lip, the flat-spokes look (though my GF says they weren't actually flat) and didn't seem to be too big for the wheelbase of the car.

now, how is that possible according to what the guy at the tire shop told me? can anyone explain or point me in the direction of an article that might enlighten me please? thanks!
EDIT: if anyone knows of a rim that is the way i described above and can be had for $3000 or less please chime in!

I wanted the same thing until i found out that it was not available for a front whell drive. I guess you dont learn if you dont ask. As far as a staggard look...to each is their own...this is what i ended up doing, both front and reat are the same lip but i got close as i could and all for less than $2000 for wheels and tires. They are not flat but i just wanted you to see the lip. These are the Helo Tease....I have had no true issues with them and they have been a good rim for me.

Hope this helps,
Chef

that's probably what i'm going to end up doing. i've seen two different rims (at different places) that give me teh lip but are curved out somewhat and are in black and i think they'll look good. not as good as what i wanted but hey, gotta go with the options i have i guess...

The zenetti five will get you very close to look that you want. Hit has a fairley deep lip like greg's wheels( as shown above) and the spokes are flat and you can get it in black or chrome.

i had seen those, but it's got a couple of problems from what the picture looks like:

is that a chrome lip or a machined lip?
can i get that black glossy? i dont want it flat black...

other than that, i do like the design, just not if it can't be glossy black + chrome lip

EDIT: read up on WheelStudio.com and those are nice, but not for me. They're (apparently) only available with the machined lip and i want chrome lip. I'm decided though, that's definetively the look i want, 5 spokes (in black!) with a flat look and chrome lip. so if there's anything else like it out there, throw it at me please :-)

It is a chrome lip and it is glossy black. I have the Zenetti throwbacks but the lip on the five is a bit deeper.

Cant wait to see pics of custom rims that give a huge lip like on the bmw's. I love that look too but... I've read alot of threads on here about staggard rims on fwd and it suposedly isn't good performance/handling wise which is why I didn't try to go crazy custom and spend big bucks for rims. I enjoy my 20"X9 all the way around. But for you guys who like looks more than anything, it's going to look super nice. Have pics but i'm not home so dont have access to them right now

I have staggered 20's on my car. They look great and I've got a huge lip in the rear. 20 X 9 in front and 20 X 10 in the rear. You just have to get the right offset depending on how big of a lip you want.

I'll see if I can get some pics up.

if you want the fat lip you will have to go 20 x 10 in the rear. and 20 X 9.5 in front. not many rims are in 20 x 9.5 so you will have to go 9 or 8.5. hope this helps. if you do go 20 X 10 in the rear you will have to roll your inner wheel well. Try this website
superbuytires.com. they have a large inventory. hope this helps

This is a pic of my rear wheel. It's a 20 X 10 with a 3.5" lip.

No modifications were needed to put these wheels on. Also, I'm lowered on eibach springs.

that's one i had looked at before. i like the look of it when running, but not so much when it's stopped. i want something that looks like that when its running and when its stopped as well. what size are yours?

and how am i supposed to fit 10" wide rims in this car? i was told i could barely fit a 9"? i DONT want the rim to look like it's coming out on the side.

Yeah, I def agree with you on the fact that the rims look very good when running, and decent when stopped

The rims I have are 20 x 8.5, def don't come out on the side

Although, If you went with 20 x 9.5, you would be pushing it a bit, from what I'm visualizing

10" wide are for the rear only, with the right offset the rim shouldn't stick out at all..

I have a 9.5" (35mm offset) wide rim and its within the body and not sticking out.

if i just go to the guy at the tire place and tell him i want different widths front/rear to get as big a lip as possible, you think he can figure it out? cause i really can't get the hang of this

Trojan,

Here goes a pic my rims on a 4" inch lip. They are 22's (22x9) and I like the deep lip look alot. I tried to go with a deeper lip but there really wasn't much around. On a black car I really like these rims a lot.

I dont want the rims to stick out, but I have a choice between going with 18x8.5 or 18.9.5 both with a 35 offset, do you think they would stick out if i go the 9.5 plan?
