hubcentric ring necessary?

Hub-centric Rings
Hub-centric rings ensure that the wheels are perfectly centered on the vehicle's hub. These rings do not offer any increase in safety, nor do they reduce structural integrity, but they do assist in providing a vibration-free ride. The hub-centric ring kits that we offer are made of the highest-grade materials and are included with your wheel purchase at no additional cost.
They make it seem like they're not necessary.

Keeping the wheel precisely centered on the hub when it is mounted will minimize the chance of a vibration. Some wheels are designed to fit multiple vehicle models and will use a centering ring system to reduce the bore size to match the hubs of different vehicles. These rings keep the wheel precisely positioned as the lug hardware is torqued down.
I had a discussion with the manager at a tire store, he claims they're not necessary. If they're not necessary, he couldn't explain why manufacturers include them. If manufacturers include them, he couldn't explain why they're not important. What's going on?

For the short story, a hubcentric wheel is designed to be supported by the center hub on the car. A lug centric wheel is designed to be supported by the wheel studs and secured by lug nuts. The Maxima is a hub centric design and you should use a hub ring to match the wheel to the hub. The lug nuts and studs are designed to keep the wheel secured to the hub not support the car.
There are lots of people running with out the rings and their wheels don't fly off. People cross the street all the time with out getting hit by a bus. Is it worth $20 to ensure your wheels are properly attached to your car??? it is to me.
