clearance issues with FD RX7 Wheels
clearance issues with FD RX7 Wheels
Alright guys I got some of those 16x8 FD wheels locally with new tires for about 150, good deal huh. Anyway, I knew just because they are so wide (tire size 245/50/16) they would rub on SOMETHING. I wasnt expecting it to be the spring though on my Ksport Coilovers though. They seem to have a very very small ammount of space between the spring and the tire, a couple millimeters at most. I havent even tried to turn the wheel and see where it hits because I plan on raising the car up some anyways. What i'm wondering is what size spacer should I get? Would 10 mm be enough? That might push the wheels out to where they'd hit my fender though...maybe another thing raising the car a little bit might solve..but I think it'd still conflict when the strut compressed over a bump or something. Why the hell couldnt they make the fenders wider damnit.
Maybe If I get a pair of 16x7.5 rx7 wheels I can run something slightly skinnier and keep those on the front until I'm involved in activity where I need that wider tires up front, and move the spacers from the rear to the front as well, in that situation.
but for now I just need to grab some spacers real quickly so I can drive this thang.

theres a pic of what it looks like just for ****s and giggles. Well.. i turned the steering wheel and the clearance actually wasnt bad at all, I really had to turn the steering wheel ALL the way to get them to touch the inside of the fender wells. Im still going to raise the car up and i still want to get a little spacer in there but I dont know if I should do 5 mm or 10mm.

raise the car a tad and space them out to the fender, just measure...When your suspension compresses, the resulting negative camber will push the tire behind the fender to solve any clearence issues...
Your going to want a massive spacer, probably around 20-25mm, just measure to make sure...
Edit: On second thought the car isnt that low, next time go with 245/45s when your tires run low again, that sidewall is MASSIVE!
yeah they are 50mm. I raised the car up a little bit maybe not enough but I can always go back later and raise more. I dont think I want a spacer that big ...i'm thinking 10mm would be fine...I mean they pretty much clear everything I just dont like how close they are to the strut/spring area...raising it up might even make that less of a problem. BUT like you said, the sidewall looks a little big...the overall diameter of my fronts are probably bigger than my rear 17's right? I have 235/45 on the back...and 245/50 on the front lol.
I am really liking the 16's and starting to think about selling the 17's if i can find 2 more...because what will they be good for anyway? sad...i loved those damn wheels too.

So long as you change your studs a spacer that big won't be dangerous, if thats what you are worried about...I just like a flush wheel...
If your worried about price, check this out http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=149974
I asked the seller which would fit our cars, but he didn't answer, not buying yet so i didn't PM him or anything...
BTW I think they are bigger, slightly, 45 series would look better, and you wouldn't have to lift the car more most likely...

zilvia.net alwayys takes a minute to load on my comp for some reason. Wow those prices arent bad at all. I wasnt worried about the stud length really, in fact...I thought it would be okay to run a 5 mm spacer without extending the studs. I wasnt concerned with the wheels being that flush, the fronts are fine with me, the rears are tucked in of coarse, but I dont even have a matching set yet so its no conern right now.
I think with a smaller sidewall and a little baby spacer I should be in the clear. But whether I need longer studs for 5 and 10 mm spacers is the question

Edit: BTW I wouldn't risk a spacer without studs, 5mm may be ok, but Its not something you want to be skimping on
i hear ya, im a conservative guy haha jk. The rears are rediculous the way they are tucked in.
I read somewhere that nismo studs were like 60~ bucks for 10 which isnt bad either. Unless studs come with the spacers that guy is selling. Also, I read not just ANY stud works, it has to have the right shape apparently (according to Nealoc).

No need to worry
Just ask which will fit before you buy...
4th and 5th gens have a rear beam for the rear suspension instead of an independent rear...something happens when you lower the car a significant amount, like you did with your coilovers.
Forgot exactly what it is, search for it, but basically your rear beam becomes Off center and you have less space between the tire and fenders on one side than the other...People noticed it when they rubbed on one side but not the other...
