Painting?

So I'm not really modding my car anymore but my stock rims are crappy and i would like to paint them just to get rid of caked on dust and scratches. I was planning on fixing them and painting them but I'm read some mixed reviews about after. Some say they turn out ****ty in a bout a year. Anybody know someone that had good results? They do anything special? And no, I'm not paying more money then paint to fix these so new powder coat or rims is not in the equation. Thanks.

Its like anything else...do it right, it'll last. This is what I would do:

Strip the wheels, air craft stripper, what ever.

Sand it down with say 800 grit, then 1200 and 2000.

Primer, optional. It would give a very nice base, IMO, yes.

2-3 coats of the base color coat. Follow paint curing/coating instructions for each type(enamel, lacquer, etc...). The first coat should be light, NOT cover everything. The second should cover everything. The third should be a moderate coat just to add more protection, durability and depth. If needed, or desired, coat more. No harm done.

Wait a while(Id give it as long as you can, 3 days, 7 days, weeks etc.) to cure, the more the better. It also depends on the type of paint. Lacquers take a lot longer than enamels IIRC, and enamels are harder.

2 dry coats of clear. As in before, lay down a light coat of clear for a base. Then lay down another light coat to get a full coating of clear.

1 Wetcoat of clear(this is only if you want shine). Do this by spraying the clear until it starts to look "wet". DO NOT hold it in one spot. Once it looks wet, stop. Any more and it will run...

1 Dry coat of clear(for a matte/semi gloss look). Use a medium coat for matte, a heavier coat for semi gloss.

---

Wet sanding is recommended between base clear coats. 2000 Grit with lots of soapy water is the way to go. More aggressive if needed.

ALWAYS cover up your painted objects so dust/debris doesnt get on them

Paint in a back and forth motion, at different angles and distances.

Recommend a spray gun. Rattle cans are...not the quality.

Good luck.
