235/40/18 tires

I bought a set of Kumho Ecsta ASXs about 22k miles ago and they are somehow about shot in terms of treadwear (wear bars are creeping).

Looking for some feedback from those of you who have 235/40/18s.

I am considering Conti Extreme Contacts.

Not sure how/why but these high treadwear 420 AA Kumho's have yielded less miles than I thought they would. The Contis are only 400 AA...

I lived in Florida and they seemed to be doing well but once I moved back to Iowa they have performed terribly poorly (a lot of this I am sure is due to increased mileage and wear, but they are NOT recommended in snow/ice conditions).

Thanks in advance.

Toyo Proxes 4's

But they aren't the best during the winter months.

Any feedback on Yokohama AVID W4s?

I am deciding b/w the Conti Extreme Contacts and the Yokos but I would prefer less road noise to snow/ice.

Everything I have read favors the Yokos.

The Yokos are more expensive but at Tirerack they are still cheap at $138/tire.

Really have it narrowed to the following:

Conti Extreme Contacts
Yoko Avid W4s
Avon Tech M550

If anyone has had these tires let me know!

I had Conti Extreme Contacts 245/40/18s on and I liked them. Comfortable, good in rain (no snow in SoCal) and fairly quiet but you give up a bit on dry traction.

If i needed a good budget tire i would get the UHP's as well. Currently running Toyo T1-R's but need to save cash so next tires will be cheaper.

UHP's are a fantastic summer tire, and cannot be beat for the price.

Gents, keep in mind I live in Iowa and the Generals are not advised in winter conditions.

Here is a remark from the writers at tire rack:

We do not suggest Exclaim UHP tires be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

I am leaning towards the Yokos.

anyone heard of GT radial tires, namely HPZ series all season tires? From what I read online, this is made by an indonesian tire co. Quite a few positive comments but they're for a different size than 235/40/18. any input? thanks

Toyo Proxes4 in 235/40/18 - cheapest at edgeracing.com. great all-season tire. I'm on my third set now and have been happy with them.

I just put Bridgestone 760's on mine. Granted, they are new but in the torrential rains we had over the last few days they did really well.

I am curious how well they perform when they have more than 200 miles on them. Hehe.

95W 340AA 27# tire, so its a tad heavy.

i was looking at the 760s as well. New tire, i wonder how they perform. They are a preety good price though
hows the sidewall and dry traction and noise levels on them?
What size do you have?

Size: as described in the thread 235/40/18
Noise: Mostly been in the rain, so its kinda hard to tell. Only driven it a couple days on dry pavement. Doesnt seem noisy "now" (most treads develop the noise as the get mileage)
traction: Surprisingly good. I can still spin em with my wimpy 3.0 but the dont talk or squeel in the corners. See footnote in Noise.

I moved from a 17" to an 18" (G rims) so the sidewall is much different. I went from a 50 to a 40. I think givne my new setup the feedback from the wheel is nicer, IE: more. It does dogtrack a lot more though too.

dogtrack? from rear as in an alignment issue?

Hmm, probably bad use of words. As in the ruts in the road effect how the car tracks more. The car tends to follow the ruts more for some reason. Dont know if its the tires or the bigger/wider rim. *shrug*
