Had 4 Yokohama yk520's until last summer. Drivers rear disintegrated in the middle of Wyoming. Didn't want to drive 300 miles to destination on the spare. Only place open in Laramie, WY was Walmart. They sold me a Goodyear Eagle Authority (225/50/17) to get me back on the road. Now I need to replace the other 3 Yoko's because they're down to wear indicators and won't pass safety for new tags. Can't find info on the Goodyear Eagle Authority on the web except for Wallyworld bashing posts. Anyone running these? Looks like a decent tire. Deciding whether to buy 3 more or go with 4 new (something else) and waste the $ spent on the Goodyear. Thoughts...? (without this becoming a Walmart bashing thread)

 

"Authority" may be a Goodyear tire model produced or branded for sale at Walmart only. If you can't find it on Goodyear's website then that's the reason why you can't locate it elsewhere. I know that Goodyear and Michelin both produce tires that are branded with specific names just for Canadian Tire up here in Canada but they look like any standard production model.

 

I agree with Samson about why you can't find it elsewhere. If you like the tire then just order 3 more. On the other hand, if you want to use it as a full size spare, you can maybe find another rim at the junk yard then get 4 of what you really want. I keep saying i'm going to do it but haven't found one here.

 

The only thing I can find is someone saying it's the same as a Goodyear Eagle GT but it's not because of a slightly different tread design... It's hard to say if I really "like" it since it's on the rear. No way to tell what kind of rain/snow traction it has. Seems to run quieter than the Yoko YK520's but again, it's the only one on the car. At least it's on the drivers side and I've listened for road noise with the window down and don't hear much... As far as getting 4 more different tires and keeping this as a full size spare, it wouldn't fit in the trunk on a trip with my wife's FULL SIZE luggage. I want my spare to fit down in the well. Will probably buy 3 more today and post how they perform. I'll be the only one on the org with them... or willing to admit it One good thing about Walmart tires is they have a policy that if you don't like them you can bring them back for a full refund within 30 days.

Tire Rack and here were my first searches. Since it's sold exclusively through Walmart there isn't much out there

 

What was your opinion of the YK520's? I have them on my car and I think they are crap. Mileage is good on them but traction really sucks on both wet and dry conditions and if there is now on the road, forget about going anywhere. I guess that what I get for going with cheap tires.

 

ive heard of the Eagle assurance tires not the authority. no possible way you got it mixed up is there?

I thought I liked them when I first got them but after trying to drive in snow was a different story. Hydroplaning is bag too. IMO forget the YK520's. You should see how the one blew out in the middle of Wyoming. I've never seen anything like it. Will post picture

They aren't too cheap even at discount they are 163 a pop now, there tons of tires much cheaper! I have had nothing but good luck with them and they stick and do well for me, better than the stock Potenzas and the Kumhos that I had. Only downside is the soft sidewall!

 

Get 3 more of the GY. If you get tired of it, replace with a new set of a different brand.

 

I was going to say that too about not being that cheap. I've never really been impressed with them unless on dry pavement and NOT in Wyoming! Here's the aftermath of the YK520. The entire tread came off both sidewalls at 85ish MPH. I checked tire pressure 250 miles before this happened and had no warning. Luckily it wasn't a front and didn't damage the rim at all. Was amazed at that. Discount Tire must use Gorilla glue for bead sealant

 

Woooow, good thing like you said! Good to hear that you did not have any rim damage etc, yes you guys do get lots more ice and snow up there so I see your point.

That's what's nice about leather... Easier to clean. What I haven't mentioned is my son and I were in the car and about an hour before it shredded I ran it up to 130-135 for a minute or two just for ***** and grins. Don't think the outcome would have been the same at that speed. You know when you're out in the middle of BF-Wyoming, the road's straight, dry and fairly flat and there is absolutely NOTHING to look at in Wyoming on I-80 it's hard to resist the go pedal with a VQ

Guess I have been lucky with them, I'm on my 2nd set and feel the opposite. Quiet, didn't get loud with mileage and track great.

 

I'd rather run Pep Boy specials than anything made by Good Year.

I had trouble twice with quality issues and all they did was give me the run around.

Enough said.

I'm running Michelin Pilot's. Couldn't be happier. And Sear's carries them so they will work with you on issues anywhere in the country even if you didn't buy them there.

 

Update: After thinking about tires for the last two weeks... Didn't even think about the Yokohama warranty on the YK520's. Called Discount Tire and they gave me back $81.93 per tire from the prorated Yoko 60,000 warranty, had road hazard so they gave me full credit for the dead YK520 carcass (I knew there was a reason I kept it in the garage) so now I'm getting 4 new Continental Extreme Contact DWS for $172.21. I only have 26,000 on the YK520's and Discount is GREAT to work with. Just have to wait 3 days for the Conti's to get in from California. Anyone need an almost new Good Year Eagle Authority?

 

Let me know how the Conti's are (heard good things about them), I just purchased some new Yoko's from them 2 weeks ago and if you say the Conti's are good I may make up a reason to return the Yoko's!

 

Did you get the Yoko yk520's? I'll let you know once I get them this week. I wrote some good things about the Yoko's on the org a while back but after driving on them for 26k miles I wouldn't buy them again and ....my wife HATES them! Maybe Discount has a 30 day exchange policy... I would take them back now and get the Conti's

I was laughing at a thread on an Acura forum when they were discussing the Continental ExtremeContact DWS tires and instead of talking about performance, they were more interested in the tire black spray foam not sticking to the sidewalls. I sure hope this isn't a problem for me. I use Mequiar's Purple tire gel and a applicator so I should be okay. Proof that these Honda guys are more interested in looks than performance. Think I'll go get a big huge rice burner muffler to make my stock max sound like a weed eater

Nope... not a member. Don't remember what gen it was just seemed kind of funny. I just found it from a Google search on those tires. One thing that someone said on Acurazine in that thread I totally agree with is if that's the only issue with the Conti tires, I'll deal with it!

 

1st Genners are a dying breed over there. 3rd and 4th Gen are alive and kicking! 2nd Genners got stuck with the bum trannies....and to this day, they are still pissed!

The 1st Gens were RELIABLE! Knock on wood.

 

Update on my update: Discount is unable to get the ContiExtremeContact DWS's in 225/50/17 and Continental has them on back order until late April so I'm going to go with the same tire in a 235/45/17 which they can get. Hate going away from stock size on stock 2000 17x7" wheels but don't have much choice with that tire. Have read extensively about running 235/45's and don't see much bad out there. Anyone else on this thread doing the same? Have you had issues with steering response... tire wear?

 

I've got 225/45/17s, fit perfect, so I can't imagine 235s would be that much different.

Just got the Continental Extreme Contact DWS's (235/45/17) installed today and so far running 32 PSI out the door from Discount Tire I took it for a spin... The tires are very quite as all the reviews say. I can actually hear wind noise around the car that I never knew was there. I don't agree with people who have said these feel soft and don't react well to steering input. I tested them on some local twisty roads and steering response is great. Ran them up to 90 on the freeway to check the balance and they're smooth as silk. I'm going to try running them at 35 F / 34 R to see if they get harsh feeling but mainly because I've read that a 235/45 on a 17x7 wheel needs a higher air pressure to wear properly. I've also read that 235/45/17's on stock 17x7 wheels will cause a bulged looking sidewall. That's not the case with these. The sidewall contour looks the same as the 225/50/17's that came off the car. Last thing... with the Yoko's I could get dry wheel spin in 1st, bark on the shift to 2nd and sometimes 3rd if I were really on it. These things won't even break loose in 1st. I could dump the clutch but that wouldn't prove anything about the tires.

I ran the cont extrem before these and they are junk. Tread wear awful and wet traction awful.

 

You are lucky that tire did not tear the hell out of your car. I was riding with my sister one time and we had a blow out on the interstate. The tire bashed the quarter panel to pieces and did about $3000 in body damage.

 

I hear that! As soon as we got stopped and I was able to look at the aftermath I couldn't believe no body/wheel well damage at all and no rim damage at all. I'm sure the only thing that saved the body was that the tire didn't come apart as a strip and flap around. My daughter had that happen on an Old's front tire and it caused about $3000 in body damage... of course that car was only worth about $2.5k so was totaled by a tire
