New Tire Recommendations

Hello,

I need to replace my 4 tires within the next two weeks. I need an all season tire - noise and wear are crucial to me, hence need a tire that is quiet, has good grip on the road and does not wear too fast.

I have thought about Continental Extreme Contact DWS. What others do you suggest for regular, non-track/racing driving.

Since I bought Bridgstone turanza Serenity tires for the 16" wheels on 2000 Maxima I put 25K miles on it, still like brand new tires. with nitrogen air fill and 35 psi Excellent tires.

My back 2 are serenity and they just don't want to quit. And yes they are VERY quiet. I bought them both used. BTW I'd buy the 235/50/17 from tirerack since the pricing is so odd on there.

I have Yokohama AS430 all-seasons on my Maxima, size 225-50-17. They were on the car when I bought it last year. They have been really good tires. They have been very quiet, and I only had to have them balanced once. I believe they have been superseded by the new AVID ENVigor, which is all-season and has a treadwear rating of 560.

I've also had Falken Ziex ZE-912 tires, and they are just as good as my current Yoko's, if not better.

If you drive in the snow stay FAR AWAY from Falkens. Those tires were terrible on this car. Terrible treadwear. Sidewalls were soft as well. The car would lean like an SUV. Buy this tire if you want to get yourself killed.

Goodyear Triple Treds are an amazing All Season option. They can plow thru some serious snow.. Strong sidewalls that hold up in corners. Not sure about road noise, they dont bother me anyhow.

Old Falkens right before I got rid of them and put on the TripleTreds ---->

I had Yokohama Advan V4S tires on my Toyota Matrix (I know, it's not a Maxima), and found them to be relatively inexpensive, pretty quiet, and quite good in inclement weather. The AVID ENVigor replaces them, they look like the improved version.

Right now I run General Exclaim UHP's in the summer for daily driving, and Nokian WR2's in the winter. I'd recommend the Nokians for all-season use for everything but the noise, although I am told the new ones are much much quieter. There is only so much you can do to make that much siping be quiet.

Living in Florida, I can't vouch for snow performance. I did have those particular Goodyears on a previous car I owned, and I absolutely hated them. They were on the car when I bought it, and I immediately junked them. To me, the sidewalls didn't feel strong at all and they most certainly didn't hold up well in corners. I replaced them with FK-452's and it was a night and day difference in performance, cornering grip, and overall wet and dry traction. The ZE-912's I didn't have for long enough to give a full evaluation of them, but for the short time I had them on another car I had before I sold it, they seemed good, just not as good as the FK's which are higher performance oriented.

I have heard nothing but good things about the DWS. If you decide to go with those, you would be happy with them.

I've driven on all 3 generations of the Continental Sport Contacts, and they have all been great tires. However, they aren't all-season and are designed for very high performance. I've driven various model Porsche's with these tires, and they are fun and they let you know where the limits of adhesion were without giving you that sudden "oh s**t" breakaway that gets inexperienced drivers in trouble with making over-corrections.

I'm running Kumho Ecsta Platinums and I have no complaints. Quiet, decent snow traction, good dry and cornering. A touch lax in the wet. It really does nothing wrong and nothing outstanding. A good all around DD tire IMO.

Hmm.. Well, these particular Goodyears(225/50/17) are V rated which means stronger sidewalls.. Not all Triple Treds come with a high sidewall rating. Maybe you had the ones that were 'T' or 'H' rated.

I don't recall what the speed rating was on them, to be honest. After going on Tire Rack and researching your tire size, I was shocked to see that they are selling for $195 a pop That's alot of dough for an A/S tire.

It is a lot of dough, but they have been worth every penny so far.

Goodyears $195 ea
16 oz steak $8
Getting through an unplowed ally without 4WD.... priceless

Two years ago picked up a set of Michelin Primacy MXV4 at the Mt Laurel Costco--best tires I have had on my I30--great in NJ show, great wear, sure-footed in the rain, and quiet (after the first 1000 miles, some noise when they were new). Also, the car seems to track much better ie no pulling to the right or left.

http://michelinman.com/tire-selector...4/tire-details

Sometimes Costco discounts the Michelins(check their web site), and they provide free tire damage repair and rotations/balancing for as long as you own the tires. Not bad!

You do, however, need to be a Costco member to buy from them

Hankook Ventus IIs are pretty good. I am running them for the second time around. For snow driving isn't too bad, as I live in Colorado. At the end of the day it comes down to your budget, what you're looking for, etc., etc..... Good luck in finding the tires you want.

I am running 225/50/17 on my 2002 Max.

I just recently put the DWS on my car. I honestly love these tires so far, can't wait to try them in the snow. Excellent wet traction so far. Tire noise is nonexistent and they're very comfortable tires even at 235/45/ZR17. I'd highly recommend these tires.

I have Michelin Primacy MXV4's all around, 215/55/16 and they are excellent. Quieter, great rain handling, yet somewhat sporty when you're having fun... I got them about $130/ea at Discount Tire here in Florida.

depends what you ar looking for

My '03 I-35 came with bridgestones. I'm older, drive on a rough concrete highway at 75 mph for an hour to and from work. The Bridgestones drove me crazy with the thumping and rough ride. They handled well.

Around 40K I changed to the Kumho Ecsta Platinums. For me they were great. Quiet, softer ride ( less precise turn in for corners, not an issue for me), went 70K miles, good enough in wet and snow for NC. I went to buy a second set and the tire store put a different Kumho on there and I'm not as happy. This second set have 50k+ on them and I may go back to the others pretty soon.

Good luck with your pick.

Chuck

Bridgstone Potenza Pole Positions have treated me well. Great grip on tarmac! Mediocre in snow.

If you want the best performance tire for a DD, I hear Michelin Pilot Sport A/S is the way to go

I had the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S, but switched to the Conti DWS and noticed less road noise and not much difference in performance. I'd still give the nod to the Michelins in terms of handling.

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S are very popular but they are more expensive so it comes down to your budget. If you're considering the Continental ExtremeContact DWS, in the same price range you can also get the Bridgestone Turanza Serenities.

Truthfully I haven't had any experience with any of these so I'm pretty much just reiterating the opinions of others who have had experience with them on this forum. I've had a pretty good experience with Kumho Ecsta ASX in summer and winter conditions. I'm looking to get them replaced though for this upcoming winter and PepBoys has a pretty sweet deal on Black Friday for Hankook Ventus V4's:

http://www.theblackfriday.com/ads/pe...iday-ad2.shtml

$80/tire for 205/55/16 so I'm guessing about $100-110/tire for 225/50/17 + buy 3 get 4th free + $50 gift card if you buy 4 = $190 for the 16's or $250-280 for the 17's FOR 4 TIRES INSTALLED!!!

I consider anything under $350 for a set of 4 brand new tires to be an amazing deal. I'm definitely waking up at 6am for these

Hankook V4s are not a tire I'd ever drive on in the snow by choice. They came on my last max that I bought. Not a tire I'd ever buy again really. There are better choices for summer tires, and winter tires. They aren't particularly good at anything.

True there are other better options out there but Kumho and Hankook are the best budget option. I feel like they give the most bang for the buck, from my experience. I haven't had experience with a lot of tires either so this might not be a topic I can put much knowledgeable info into. I ran Kumho ASX's last winter with no problem at all. Good experience with Continentals on my dad's Altima as well.
