The planetary pins letting go and dropping down into the planetaries are apparently one of the biggest problems for blowing up these auto RE4F02A's If you can find a good shop that knows how to rebuid them then thats your best bet otherwise you roll the dice on another used one or do a 5 spd swap.

try listening to the bellhousing area with the motor running THEN
after someone ELSE turns the key off ,the motor quits spinning almost instantly
if you hear scrape noises gradually getting quieter it is the torque converter still spinning around chewed up converter blade spline teeth
the converter blade fans splines teeth strip out
which is much better than the shaft side stripping
I had to swap a torque converter on my ex gals 90 stanza and my old 92 gxe maxima
years ago after the stanza was getting on the freeway and at kickdown it just felt like it was stuck in neutral the guy at seattle northend transmission clued me in
he said and i qoute"90's nissans are the KING of conveter failure"
after i removed the stanza transmission and draining the sus torque conveter and looking in with a flashlight it was obvious he was the master
then when it happened to my 92 gxe(kickdown going up a hill) the guy at best auto repair bothell who sold me the 'lifetime"exchange transmission plus install told me the torque converter is not considered part of the transmission,
so he knew too just by the symptom
so i had to fix the 92 gxe maxima torque converter as well
maybe previous owners did neutral drops/burnouts racing,I never really thrashed on my gxe maxima and dont think my ex slammed around her stanza
the vg30 and the ka24 fury cannot be contained

havent ran into anymore which makes me think its from hard drivin
AND I have been saying this here a few times in the last too many years
