car leaking oil and coolant!!

my 95 max has 145k miles its been leaking for some time now. took it to the shop today and got some bad news. mechanic told me that the oil leak is coming from the timing chain cover and the coolant he wasnt sure because the car didnt leak coolant there . i saw the leak on sunday and it was coming from under the engine, right above the second stage oil pan but he said he saw no coolant leak at all. he said it might be coolant thats weaping from the water pump. as for the price to fix the oil and possibly the water pump if it is that, he quoted me at $550 for labor and parts including belts. does the leak sound like its the water pump though??isnt it too expensive?

yea, if you know its leaking, but you cant see from where...chances are at that mileage, your're looking at a waterpump O-ring issue. Its not an uncommon thing in these cars. $550 for fixing both problems isnt bad. Truthfully, if you're fixing the timing cover leak, then you should be swapping out that waterpump since he'll be in there anyway.

the price might sound resonable but its expensive..but ive got to get it done if i want to keep my car running for a while longer.damn, at least ill pay $600 once, better than paying 500 or 600 a month for a new car, at least for me. rough times now a days

Indeed, most likely a waterpump issue. If you're really strapped for cash, you can drive it until you have the money to replace the water pump.

How many labor hours is he charging you? Once the front cover is off, the water pump is a 10 minute job, really. Only thing that's different from doing a regular front cover re-seal is swapping out the pump (which is incredibly easy) and filling up the cooling system.

Yea, he's being about right with you. It takes a while to reseal the front cover because of the limited space.

I've got 183,000 miles on mine and the upper oil pan rear seal is leaking. Its a slow leak so I haven't bothered to get it fixed... a quart every 3-4k. Is this the same leak as the OP was taking about?

Nope, yours is different. As for my self, i have a RMS leak as well as the mentioned TC cover oil leak. Either you deal with it and periodocally add oil or you shell out the cash.
