engine misfire but no codes.....

i was almost home and the engine started chugging away as it has in the past when an injector goes bad. i was surprised to see no c/e light and scanned her and got no codes. i could hear the back part of the engine misfiring when i revved it up with the hood open, then it went away. i've been running the gas tank to a quarter full or less lately and that seems to be when this stated. cam sensor would throw a code, right?? plugs are fresh from last year, fuel filters good, air filters good, would the coil packs going bad throw a code?? help, suggestions from engine guru's, thanks

If I didn't have a tool to run a power balance test to isolate the misfiring cylinder, I would disconnect the coil plug wires, one at a time, then start the engine and let it idle to find the misfiring cylinder. Basically that's how a power balance test works -- though you do it while the engine is running. Once I found the misfiring cylinder, then I would switch that cylinder's coil with the nearest cylinder to see of the problem moved with the coil. That would rule out a failing coil.

As a side note, when I had broken injector pintle cap problems, I did get random cylinder misfire codes on the cylinders with the problem.

How long has it been since the plugs were replaced and what type of plug are you running? Sometimes a good visual inspection of plugs will show whether cylinders are all burning evenly.

My car was doing the same and it turned out to be the front injector as it was missing the pintle cap. It didn't throw a code either but what I did was rev it in park really hard a few times and it finally threw a code and it was for the cylinder number 2 p0302 and the spark plug was fouled black. So just rev it hard a few times so it will throw a code.

man, i love this car but she's starting to **** me off. they were replaced late last year and are platinum ngk's. i know it's one of the rear injectors, i threw a code earlier this year for a cylinder 5 misfire and just cleared the code. it has'nt been a problem since till last night, i'm going to fill her up with premium tomorrow and see what she does, i think when i run her low like i've been doing lately she starts diking around on me, the *****.

Lol !!! Yooo my car was acting weird today to, she didn't want to accelerate so I redlined it. And started working normally. Cold weather problems?? I've always had good experience using bg44k every once in a while when I fill up completely with 93. Pricey tho..if you blew a coil pack or it just up'd and failed..you'd notice immediately. Check engine light will appear.

Don't be too mad. You had a good run and have a ton of miles on your max, right? The injector job I did not too long ago was on a Maxima with only 160k.

Same here at roughly the same mileage. I just call it the need for a good mid-life maintenance.

if i could do it myself i'd be alot happier then having to pay my mechanic to do it. 260.00 plus the injector really pisses me off, i have no garage and that's not a bad rate for around here. too cold to stand outside and do it

I would do all three "under plenum" injectors at a minimum. It may be as simple as a broken pintle cap. However, if one cap is broken, there may be more pintle cap problems on the way.

How would your shop react to you sending the injectors to DeatschWerks in OKC for a quick refurbish?

Agreed on replacing the back 3 injectors at the same time. Speaking of Deatchwerks, I have two sets of injectors there right now getting the works.

Timing does suck, I think I'm now developing an injector problem now as well, getting bad gas mileage and throttle response. I'm reaching 170K very shortly, I made a short vid this mourning to see if I was blowing out blue smoke upon cold start and I believe it is. so I just made it into a video. Not trying to Jack your Thread B!

Now pull out the spark plug for the 3rd cylinder and see if its fouled with fuel and the color of the spark plug should be black which means it has gone bad due to the injector dumping to much fuel. That's how you will tell your injector has gone bad.

Before you do anything though, do a little detective work. Inspect the spark plug of cylinder 3 and compare it to another one as previously stated. Also swap coilpacks with another cylinder, clear the code, and see if the code moves to the other cylinder. If the code doesn't move, well it's probably the cylinder 3 injector as we suspect.

Also, from personal experience, I have a loose coil pack connection on mine (the clip that goes into the coil pack itself), causing my engine to sound like a big flutter, and you can tell it doesn't run smooth. Although it doesn't throw a code, I have to mess with it almost every time I start it up, fixes it right away. When I had that issue and would give it gas, it would flutter louder as the rpms climbed

Well c'mon down.. My neighbor uses my garage when he needs to work on his 4th gen.

Tell us about this timing problem.. We don't want to see you loose a good engine.
