GL-4 Gear Lube Question

I have a 99 Maxima with manual transmission. I was changing out the passenger CV axle and didn't catch the gear lube that came out and I'm guessing I lost about 2 or 3 quarts. I don't have any gear lube on hand and this is my daily driver so I'm in a bit of a bind.

Other than some GL-4 I found at NAPA (I think it was Sta-Lube 85W-90, not 80W-90 the shop manual recommends), I don't seem to be having any luck finding GL-4 locally so does anyone have any suggestions? Can I use GL-5 for a few days until my order of GL-4 comes in? Has anyone used Sta-Lube before? I currently have Amsoil synthetic 75W-90 and my guess is that the Sta-Lube isn't synthetic so is it OK to mix the two for a few days?

Thanks, Paul

It's ok to mix.
Just stay GL4 and you'll be ok.
Never use GL5.

Good choice with the Amsoil.

I've used Sta-lube. It is very thick. Not great for cold weather, it still gets the job done.

I have used Redline. Not the cheapest, but generally available in performance oriented auto parts stores. It is synthetic, and flows well at low temperature. Very smooth shifting. I change mine half as often, at the 60000 mile service intervals.

Go to any VW or BMW shop they carry GL-4, i personally use Motul and Amsoil. Never use GL-5, GL-5 eats away brass and our transmissions have Brass in them so its a no-no.

NAPA was the only place that had it around me. I used panzoil suncromesh as it is safe for soft/yellow metals. But it is much thinner than GL4, I found shifting is much smoother with the GL4 vs syncromesh.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I went by NAPA yesterday and got some GL-4 so I can drive my car. After I replace the driver's side axle, I'll do a complete drain and refill with Amsoil.

Anyone know a place online that has the redline mt-90 for cheap? Really rather not spend $16+ per quart if it can be found for less.

you get what you pay for. gear lube is not in high demand because people typically neglect to change trans fluid so just pay up atleast you only for it once a year or every 2 year depending on how much you drive.
