Weatherstripping around Trunk

Weatherstripping around Trunk
I purchased a new, supposedly oem, weather strip for my trunk. I thought it would arrive as a complete circle but its a line of weather stripping. Is that normal? The original looks like there's no split in it (e.g., complete circle). Won't this separation where the seam is result in leaks? Am I supposed to use some kind of product to seal the seam together?

I would install it in a way such that the the seam is at the lowest point.
Since the top edge (closest to the rear window) of the trunk opening is higher than the bottom edge (closest to the license plate/rear bumper), I would put the seam dead center near the bumper. Water could not possible trickle upwards into the trunk at that location.
