Is the plastic broken or is the cable broken? It's hard to see in the pic.
I'm looking at some pics I took of mine last time I had it apart but I can't see much different.
There's also a bracket that holds the cables right before they connect to the transmission. This bracket is weak and tends to fail. When it does, it feels like a broken cable. 04-06 bracket is a stronger direct replacement.

Dear OP.
The photo you provided, didn't offer much help, but we always appreciate the effort!
You're going to have to investigate two points.
1. Under your radio
-Make sure both rods (The goldish thing you photod) goes in and out smoothly (Bent rod = game over, new cables)
-Make sure the cables are securely fastened to the shifter (big plastic thing you have pictured)
2. Under your hood (under the ABS unit)
-Make sure the shift cable bracket isn't broken, the 02 had a dumb design, somewhere during 03, it was revised to one piece of flimsy aluminum that will also crack over an extended period of abuse (Still anything is better than owning the previous generation 5mt, even a broken 6mt > working vlsd 5mt).
-I haven't encountered a shift rod being bent on this end before, but check it out, same as before under neath the console.
While you're doing this... Buy the ES poly bushings.... Great mod/maintenance.

I'm not sure of the official name but I'm pretty sure you'll have to go through Nissan to get it. If you find a 6 speed (Max, Altima, Sentra) in a U-pull it yard you could get it but most other salvage yards will want to sell it with the tranny.
I would just call it the "shifter" on the transmission. That's what it is in a rear drive where the stick goes directly into the shifter instead of using cables or rods.
What makes you think it's broken?

Only thing that I've had happen with one of those is a push pin falling out.
Can you take more photos of it? I can visually inspect it via the internet and tell you if it's bad or not, or make a video for you.
