Cigarette lighter receptacle

Cigarette lighter receptacle
Sold my 95 Maxima in February and bought a '14 Max. I bought the 95 new and loved the car, but it was time for a new one. I remember when I bought it that the ads claimed that the controls were carefully placed so that the driver didn't have to take his eyes off the road to use them. The '14 - not so much. My biggest complaint about the car is the placement of controls (trunk release, sideview mirrors, etc). However, the location of the 12V receptacle, aka cigarette lighter, is the absolute worst. In the four months I've owned the car I've had to fish objects out of the receptacle about ten times. I've come to the conclusion that if I'm going to use the receptacle, I can't put anything in the storage compartment, rendering it useless.
Which brings me to the reason for my post: Has anyone installed a receptacle in their dash? I have a base S model, so the panel below the radio controls looks like it could accommodate a receptacle. Any tips would be appreciated.
Having said all the above, I'm generally happy with the car and would have bought it anyway. It just galls me that, at the price f the car, I have to deal with a problem that didn't exist on my 1971 Chev Vega.
