My visit to the track this weekend

This weekend seemed perfect for drag racing... high of 8 degrees celsius, about 48% humidity, bright and sunny all day! I headed to St. Thomas in Ontario hoping to avoid any crowds this early in the year. The bottomline of the day was that it was a complete waste. The 1/8 and 1/4 mile timers at the track were NOT working... the timeslip only showed R/T, 60', 330'...

I have never had a run since I got my JWT ECU. I was hoping for Sat. to be the day. I was quite disappointed. In any case, my very first run was the best because on the rest I could not get any traction... they never cleaned the rubber off the track so the first 60' were quite bad.

This is what I got:

RT: 0.540
60': 2.200
330': 6.200

Now, I am wondering if this is ANY indication of what my 1/4 mile time could be? If I am not mistaken, the JWT ECU should bump the midrange up a bit... but I'm not sure what else it does. From the looks of it, at the 330' mark I would be at about 5500RPM in 2nd gear? So the MEVI guys haven't even tapped into their power area yet for 2 whole gears (can finish at the top of 3rd with the JWT ECU).

I was looking at Mike, Dave, Caesar and a few other guys' timeslips and with a 330' of about 6.2 I have seen times as fast as 14.2 and as slow as 14.7. I was wondering if you guys have any thoughts on that. My best out of the stock ECU and MEVI was a high 14.4 so I was hoping to at least tap into the high 14.2s but I don't know if I need a 330' of about 6.0x in order to do that?

I noticed that Mike's 330' is 5.9 when he ran his 14.19 but then again people who run mid-13s put down the same 330' so does that mean that the 330' time isn't enough of a tell-tale sign of what the 1/8 and 1/4 mile times could be?

Thanks for any input.

I don't think the information is helping you much. When I pull lower 2.2s and get lower/mid 6.2s, it usually means I'm on my way to higher 14.5s and lower 14.6s. If I get a lower 2.2 60' and 14.4s then my 330' is 6.1s. If I run a 6.2 330' and get 14.4s then my 60 foots are usually lower 2.3s.

Granted every car is slightly different, using Daves as a baseline, it appears as though you gained next to nothing with the JWT ECU as far as 1/4 mile performance goes. Maybe it's those worn Firestones? How was traction?

I'm confused... how do you know how I did in terms of 1/4 mile performance when I don't even have a time slip for it. Please share.

Traction was bad... not necessarily because of my Firestones (even though they are down to about 3mm) but because those idiots at St. Thomas never once swept the rubber off the first 60' of the track.

The stupid shack's printer was f@cked up too (missing every 5th line on the dot matrix print-out)... upon closer inspection now, my best slip looked more like this:

RT: 0.546
60': 2.280
330': 6.266

It did pull like a mother in the top of 2nd and in all of 3rd right up until about 103mph-105mph when I crossed the finish line... MAYBE that translates to a 99mph trap (which would be my PB by far). Anyway this is all speculation until I get out to the track again. I want to stick with the Firestones so that I can see if the JWT ECU helped. I guess a dyno is in order too.

Last year when I ran by PB I ran a 60' of 2.240 and a 330' of 6.167. So yeah, as Dave said, I don't think yesterday's times gave me ANY useful data.

Here is a range of my 330's and 1/4 ET's from my last two trips to Byron dragway. Both days were prett cool, April 4th was in the 50's and Nov 8th was in the 40's. I am only listing runs with similar 60's

arpril 4th 04

330-6.053
1/4-14.229

330-6.108
1/4-14.306

330-6.098
1/4-14.331

330-6.115
1/4-14.324

330-6.221
1/4-14.578

330-6.279
1/4-14.647

Nov 8th 03

330-5.989
1/4-14.190

330-6.025
1/4-14.236

330-6.006
1/4-14.218

330-6.077
1/4-14.275

330-6.210
1/4-14.611

Looks like for me, a 330' under 6.1 will be a good run. I have older data, still with my JWT ECU and VI, but I was not using race gas back then and had issues with my VI not opening. But every car is different.

Very good 330' times Mike... thanks for taking the time to post them.

Got any 330' and 1/4 mile times with MEVI + stock ECU? I think your 330' with MEVI + ECU is better than most other guys... I hope Caesar reads this... I wanna see his vs. yours.
