4th gen 5-speed vs. GTI 12v or 24v VR6

Just curious if anyone has had any run-ins with GTI's. I really wanted a VR6 before I got my Maxima. I think both cars a have very similar power/weight ratios.

I posted this this earlier in the 4th gen forum but it got locked because some guy with a jetta started causing $h!t.

I haven't raced one but just by it's stats it is a formidable competitor for the 4th gen Maxima. I want to say that the 1996 and earlier version would be a kill for the Max but those only weighed 2811lbs. The 1999-2000 GTI weigh 2890lbs. so I'm going to say it. Stock for stock I will hand it to the max if racing a 2000 and earlier version, but not by a whole lot seeing as we weigh about 100lbs more.
However, if you're racing the 2001+ VR6 then it goes to whoever is a better driver.
They have 200hp and 195tq and weigh 3023lbs.
We have 190hp and 205tq and weigh 3010lbs. (at least for the SE model)

judging from the stats listed I would say that a 24v vr6 and a 4th gen max would be a very very very close race, probably a tiny advantage to the max off the line and at higher speeds probably a tiny advantage to the vr6. the 12v vr6s respond well to mods, but stock they aren't quite powerful enough to hang, however a better driver in the vr6 would definately be able to make up for the lack of power, as the difference between us and them is not that large.

My brother had a 2002 12V GTI 5-speed. We did get to go at it twice. The Max has the better first 2 gears, you will get off the line quicker. The GTI does even it up from 3rd gear on, as we also messed around a little on the highway but we didn't really run in 4th since we didn't want to go crazy. You will beat the 12V with the Max.

Now, my brother crashed and totaled that car and got the 2002 24V 6-speed in Feb. My car has been on the sideline until now, and I just need 400 more miles to break in my new clutch. I can tell you that the 24V 6-speed is a different animal. The first 2 gears are MUCH MUCH better, and when you hit 3rd it really takes off. I believe I have a great chance only because of my Fidanza flywheel and y-pipe I just installed. If it were stock, maybe the max can stay even the first 2 gears, but it may fall behind a little with 3rd, and then hold par the rest of the way. 3rd gear is just awesome in this car.

PS, my cousin has the R32 ...now that is an AWESOME car. Sounds better than anything on the road. Can't wait to see how I fare with him, althouh he has AWD and 240hp! His 3rd gear is amazing too...I guess VW really gears 3rd nicely.

My Son has a 95 GTI VR6 and it ran a 14.1 N/A so they are no slouch.

The R32 did gain 40 hp but they also gain 400lbs. Nice to have an actual experience to see the comparison of the 2 cars.

The R32 despite the weight gain is quite a bit quicker than the standard VR6 GTi. If you ever get the chance to drive the R32, please do. It's probably one of if not the best sounding 6 cylinder on the market now (plus it handles great).

Gotta agree with Quicksilver. I have even seen some magazines get as low as 5.9 0-60. My brother ran his 24V a few times against my cousin, although I didn't witness it. The R32 shot ahead right away no matter how well my brother got out of the box, and my brother hates admitting it! The AWD just helps put the power down.

And yes, with that exhaust, you don't need a radio. As much as I love the G35/350Z exhaust note, I think this is a little better.
