Rev match and that problem will go away. Manuals put the responsibility of shifting in the drivers hands. If there is a problem with the shifting... its the driver. First, find the speed you normally shift out of first gear at. Second, find the rpms the engine is running at at the same vehicle speed in second gear. Then, when you shift from first to second let the clutch back out about 100-200 rpm above what the rpms would be at that speed in second gear in a swift but smooth action. 1st to 2nd will always be the shift you feel the most jerk with.

Also you could try skip shifting 1 -> 3. It will help you save on gas milage a bit. I shift out of first at 3k rpm and let the clutch out in third at 1500rpm.

Shifting is different for normal driving and racing. In racing ideally you do not want any delay between gears. What you need to do is push in the clutch as quickly as you can, shift as soon as you clear the engagment range on the clutch, and pop the clutch as soon as you are in the next gear. This will be real jerky and you will probably wheel hop or chirp the tires, but it really wont cause damage to the car unless you are doing it for every shift (meaning during normal driving).
