my cousin got a 03 GTI 1.8t and mah other boi got a jetta 1.8T... i underestimated that sh^t them suckerz is pretty fast.. but they both got a handful of mods. i drove the car GTI stock before and little sh^t was pretty quick too for an AUTOMATIC!!!! i dont know much about the 95... but if its GTI it can be either be 1.8T or a VR6. im pretty sure the old VW corrado was the 1st VR6 but i dont know when that was released. them turboed cars are addicting to drive too.. haha i need some boost in max then my car will rape them **** cars.. haha i keep it real with the nissans no matter what
Your friend might have the 1.8T. Fairly quick off the line, but you should be able to take it. From a roll, it's all you...assuming it's a stock car.
My brother had a 02 GTI VR6 5-speed that I was able to take off the line, and at highway speeds he kept up, but I was slightly quicker. Both were stock at the time. He crashed that car, and with the insurance money we were able to get an 02 again, but this time it was with the 6 speed VR6. In mid 2002, they updated the car to 201 hp with I think 198 tq. I took that off the line twice too, but he was stock and I had a Fidanza flywheel and y-pipe. At highway speeds, that extra gear helps. A 50 start, and it will pull until I get the Max going, but I can't catch up and pass. I also raced my cousins R32 in the highway. I kept up much better than I thought I would, although he was slowly moving ahead.
Quick note...I am a 5 speed. I don't see an auto being able to take a manual 1.8T GTI off the line because those launch pretty hard.

If he has a blown head gasket, ask him to rev the car like a **** before you race. Tell him you want to hear the power from that all mighty engine. Then ask him what that smell is coming from under his hood... and why smoke would be coming up from there.
Anyway, the 1.8T motor wasn't around in 95 iirc. Also, the GTI wasn't all that fast in 95 compared to a lot of the sportier cars, but they were quick, especially compared to the almost non-existant competition. They handle pretty well but weren't known as rocketships even though they can be made into beastly cars with some money. The VR6 can be made into a powerhouse, but the cost is preventative to say the least. The 2.0s can also be modified to produce a lot of power but most people don't bother since they can get a 1.8T motor that can be modified more easily to over 300 HP for less money than they'd spend getting the 2.0 up to that range (there's a reason VW folks refer to that engine as the 2.slow). And the only reason I know any of this is because I had wanted a 1.8T GTI until I discovered the lines at the service center for random fixes and breakages that plague VWs. Nice cars with a nice engine (the 1.8T, at least), a chip that nets about 40 ft lbs of torque (again, 1.8T), other mods that break you into the 240 HP range easily enough but I couldn't stand to take my car in every other week due to something else breaking so I decided against it.
But, if he's swapped in a 1.8T and modded it or supercharged a VR6 (possibly a supercharged 2.0 but I've not seen many of those at all), you'd be in for a heck of a race... and, I hate to say it, probably be seeing a couple of tail lights.
