Auto 4th gen vs. Stock VW VR6?
Auto 4th gen vs. Stock VW VR6?
Another guy in my car club has a 99(new style) Jetta VR6 5spd. He swears that he can beat me at the track, and on the highway, basically in any setting. I've done my research, and they are about the same weight, and have less power than the 4th gen maxima. I have an auto GLE, with rebuilt transmission, soon to get y-pipe and intake. Will it be a close race, or would there be a clear winner?
i would go to the track to settle this, but all the trakcs around here are closed till the spring. I just want to know if anyone has had any experience with these cars.
he is a fairly good driver, so I don't think he would miss a shift...
Thanks in advance.

One way to really say is that to race. I don't know how great the VR6 driver is. I have a 95 Stick and we stuck side by side. My car is stock and he had no cat and a fart bomb on his car. His is stick so is mine. Good luck and stay safe.

Not long after I bought my car I tailgated a VR6 up till 110 mph. We both shut off because of the traffic ahead. My car is stock. 15.00 in the quarter, which is slightly faster than most VR6 but a good driver will beat that. They seem to have good topend.

i have beaten one before when i was stock. they arent that fast. he ran a 15.2 and i ran a 14.8 and it was hot out side. I think he would get you even with the y-pipe. My best stock time is a 14.788 at 91.78....best time with y-pipe is 14.699 at 93.44. It def. gives you plenty more midrange and topend but with an automatic its hard to tell how much gains you would get.
Unless the guy is a moron and doesn't know how to drive a stick, I dont think you stand a chance since you have no mods on your auto. If you add some bolt-on then it will be a closer race if you are a very good driver. I have all the bolts on on my auto 2k1 and I've raced few Jetta and Audi and I could stand pretty well against them. Instead of swapping your tranny just get a Y-pipe, intake, VB recalibration and a 75 shots and call it a day, you will be running low 14's if not high 13's and spank that Jetta pretty baddly.

it really depends oon the skill of the driver of the vr6. If off a stop, he sucks and spins, then you never know. But, off a roll its all about the car, which if your 5spd. now stock will be a great run. But if your auto, forget about it. if your 5spd. with a y pipe, you'll have him.
This happened to me when i whooped a brand new 05' g35 coupe of a stop. He def. sucked

na I'm a decent driver. My 60's were like 2.36x+ I think. I had a FULL tank of gas and spare and everything were still in the car. All my sensors are perfect. Car is very well taken care of (maintanance wise)
My clutch was kinda slipping. Especially as I did run after run. I did 15 runs in succession all no more then 5 minutes apart
It was my first time and uhh.. I wanted to practice
Clutch was pretty roasted after that. I had HUGE wheel hop. I was told to let the psi out of the front tires to about 24? I had 34 in the front and 34 in the back at the time. And I was even chirping 2nd pretty hard for the first few runs till the clutch got rosey. I think I even had 3rd peep once or twice. Maybe not I don't remember too well it was like 4 months ago and I ran so many times that night its all a blur.

Vr6
Well well ... Just so happens I traded in a VR6 Passat to get my max. I had a 97 and while the engine was the best part of that car, I on quite a few occassions got my rump handed to me by stock 4th and 5th gen Max's and on one occassion a hooked up Pathfinder. I owned that VR6 for 6 years and had no work done to it yet I could take out most hooked up civics. The VR6 engine is bulletproof, and the top end is insane, purely a highway monster, yet I dare and I say dare any VW to pull up besides me with anything short of nitrous and I will let them see the huge rear on my 6th gen.
well, my car's 5spd now, soon to have a y-pipe. The vr6 owner put an exhaust and 18" rims, while i'm running on my stock 15" sawblades. I'm pretty new to driving stick, but I don't think i'm bad at it, and i'm learning how to launch a bit better. I think I can definitely take him (at the track that is)
An auto Maxima against a VR6 Jetta stick...I will give it to the Jetta all day if the person knows how to drive stick. I have a 99 5-speed Max and have beaten on the Jetta VR6 manuals stock for stock. I also took my brothers Golf GTI VR6 12 valve off the line, although on the highway it was pretty even. I may have inched from him. He traded it for the GTI 24 valve VR6, and I still managed to clip him off the line, but from a roll at 40, 50, 70, he pulls ahead. The 6-speed in the GTI just gives him a better ratio and good powerband. Right after he got the 24V VR6, I put on a y-pipe and findanza and dyno 187hp & 194tq to the wheels, so the race was with those mods.
How the heck do you run 14.7 stock ???
