Went to KCIR last Friday - sprayed 150-shot - scary on wet track

I went to KCIR (Kansas City strip) on Friday and met two other *.OGRs there : gblkrt09 (1995 5-spd) and Ride2kMax (2000 5spd) for some runs. It was really great seeing three Maximas on a drag strip at the same time. Way to represent the ORG and Maximas, guys.

My plan was to work up to a 150-shot and try to improve my PB. I got on the track by 6PM and made two 125-shot passes and three 150-shot passes. Results were not what I hoped for - and things got pretty exciting at the end.

It was raining for two days previous and rain stopped that morning, cleared out by 2PM and we had sun and wind and 60s into the evening. The track itself was dry, but puddles everywhere and you had to drive though standing water to get to the staging lanes. Remember this track is in a river-bottom area, so moisture was everywhere -everywhere.

I made two passes with 125-shot ( 75 + 50 shot), then jetted up for 75-shot + 75-shot for runs 3, 4, and 5.

---------125----------125---------150---------150---------150---
Run-------1-----------2------------3------------4-----------5----
60'........2.057..........2.055............2.028.. .......2.166...........2.189
330.......5.699..........5.651............5.639... ......5.763...........6.003
1/8.......8.726..........8.667............8.662..... .....8.759..........9.052
MPH......79.97..........79.76............80.45.... ......20.39..!.......18.01..!
1000.....11.353........11.333...........11.286.... ....11.379.........11.693
1/4.......13.582........13.617...........13.516..... ...13.609.........13.934
MPH......101.14.........99.29...........101.15.... ....101.21.........100.81

So stepping up to 150-shot made no obvious improvements, yet the car felt more powerful when hitting the 2nd stage. ?? On run 3, I noticed that after the car went into 2nd gear at 6300, it wasn't as stable - there was some change of direction. Run 4 was much scarier- I drifted across the track almost to the center line while trying to steer. Run 5 was nuts - lots of slick-spin through 1st and 2nd and the car was moving around on the track. ?? And yet the car pulled really hard after getting into 3rd gear on runs 3, 4, and 5 - not loss of power - just a loss of traction down the track.

I went back to the truck/trailer to think this over, and went to the pickup bed to check the thermometer - was 46 degrees and everything was coated with moisture - a lot of moisture. HAH - condensation everywhere - including the track, I bet. The last two passes was like a Halloween gig - it was cold and foggy and it was like driving down a tunnel when making the last two passes. Not to mention skating around on the track.

I think I wasted my time with this trip - I'll go back for one of the November Sunday grudge races if one is sunny and warm. At least I can use 150-shot with no complications. I drove the car to Lawrence KS on Saturday for a Kansas Maximas event, and all was good with the car, I pulled all the plugs and found no damage or any changes either. Whew... Next time.

What protection are you using for 150 shot? I.E. J&S, 2 step colger plugs gapped to 0.03x, race fuel?

2-step colder coppers, with shaved grounds, gapped .030, and 104 octane Sunoco blue stuff. Sometimes VP Street Blaze 103 fuel... The shaved grounds are essential to me - no more glow plugs in my motor.

That combination works well for bigger shots, it seems.

The plugs looked great after those last five runs on the strip. I've been spraying a 125-shot most all season while working on other issues.

Standard ground straps get very hot when you're spraying high amounts of nitrous. At some point, they get hot enough to ignite the cylinder before the spark - which can cause detonation or preignition, and destroy your engine.

Straighten up the ground strap, cut it off about the same height as the copper center electrode, file off any sharp corners, and bend it over toward the center electrode and set the gap to .030 or so - whatever lets your motor run without dropping out.

The other part is using a good fuel, like the Sunoco 104 blue stuff - many tracks sell it.

Yep, KCIR can be a bit of a mess when the humidity is in the air which is often thanks to it's river location. I too use to hit 2nd and 3rd and get a very errie sensation as the car would drift left or right.

PM me next time you head out on a Sunday. I still need to take my G out to test the spacer I installed way back in Janaury

Wel, I don't drive it every day (I like my SC Frontier), but if you take out the nitrous tank and put street tires back on, I did drive to Maxus 2005 and Maxus 2006 in Dallas, and get 27 MPG doing it. I also drove the car to Denver in August, no problems with plugs or anything else. Even went to Lawrence KS last Saturday for a rousing Maxima meet.

It's quite civilized to drive - fully street-legal and nothing stripped out of the car. I like it. I trailer it to tracks because I don't have a good local track schedule in Topeka, so I go to other tracks, and sometimes I break stuff - plus I carry extra tires and things. If the track wants DOT tires that day, I switch out the slicks for DRs. If the '99 Immoblizer shats on itself and locks out the ECU (happened twice), I can winch it back on the trailer and make it home.

Hi, Dave. See, you can't get away from your 4th gen rep. I'm heading back to KCIR this coming Sunday, Nov. 5. It looks like weather in the 60's and semi-sunny - by then, the swamp will have drained and the pits will be dry.

I'm filling both bottles today, and I'm looking forward to more 150-shot adventures.

Harry,

I will try and swing out to the track this weekend. The weather looks decent, but I was really hoping for low 50s and near sea level conditions like when I ran last November It looks like the DA conditions will range from 400'-800'. I'll come find you if I show. I usually get to the track 30 minutes before they open so that I'm one of the first to tech in and then make 3 to 4 back to back passes before there are any lines.

Wow... representing KS!! Sounds like you will definitely shave some time off with better traction on dry days.

On street tires in my 200sx I would clock high 13s but with slicks, low 12s consistently. Traction does make a huge difference (which you already know )

Sounds good - I'm planning on being there by noon. Look for the "silver" Maxima w/slicks or the Frontier w/trailer. Your car is easy to spot....

After Friday, a dry track and sunshine sounds good....

Dang - I want your 200SX.... Being a Nissan guy, have you signed up with "gblkrt09"'s Kansas Maxima forum? His Saturday meet in Lawrence was good - quite a collection of Nissan car guys were there. Look in the Regional Forms for the link..
