Yeah. I am still unsure which classes I will sign up for. I will probably be racing in the all out All Motor class where slicks are allowed. But, if I can get my nitrous setup tuned in time, I may just enter the all out Unlimited class as well where any power adders are allowed. Expect to see several low 11 second Maximas, if not new Maxima records! ... cough, 10s

As of right now, here are the 4 Maxima classes at the MAXUS 09 Drag Showdown:
1) Unlimited Maxima (slicks, 3.5 swaps, and any power adders permitted)
2) NA Maxima Unlimited (slicks and 3.5 swaps permitted, but no power adders allowed)
3) Maxima 3L NA street (must have DOT tires, mufflers, full interior, etc)
4) 02-09 Maxima NA street (must have DOT tires, mufflers, full interior, etc)
These classes can change without notice and are not yet official. For the most up to date and OFFICIAL information, please refer to the official MAXUS 09 website:

NWP Engineering is the main sponsor of MAXUS 09 and one of the main organizers of the entire event. I am specifically in charge of the Drag Showdown event and will be writing the event rules and class requirements myself.

Yeah. Since the rules aren't complete yet, I don't know if I'll allow drag radials in the street class even though they are DOT approved. There is a lot of work left for me to do before I release the official rules. But I'm trying my best to have them released ASAP since I know people need to prep their cars ahead of time.
well looks like I'll be in the n/a unlimited
hopefully you'll come up with something for us 3.5 swap guys who do not want to run slick or strip down the car
how about a 3.0 class and 3.5 class with no limit on year or body style

You don't have to run slicks or gut your interior to be in the Unlimited class though. There will be a lot of very high HP cars not running slicks.
Just cause you may be slower than the car you are racing, doesn't mean you can't tree them and squeeze out a win light! We will be using a 4 tenths pro tree BTW to help prevent redlights so people actually see some races!

We originally were thinking about that. But, the street class will already be very large. And we can only have a limited number of Maxima classes or run into the problem of some classes only having 3 cars in them. So, we have designated 4 Maxima classes. Plus, in order to reduce the large amounts of Maximas that will be racing in the street class, we had to draw the line somewhere and throw all the heavy hitters in the Unlimited class, including all 3.5 swaps. In my book, anybody who does a 3.5 swap knows what they are doing and doesn't need to be racing against a bunch of 15 second Maximas with intake and exhaust mods.

It's all HEADS UP! If you don't redlight, it's the first person to cross the finish line! And it's very hard to redlight on a 4 tenths pro tree.
We won't be doing any bracket racing. Only heads up!
Yeap. NA Unlimited for those serious all motor guys with motor swaps, slicks, cutouts, lots of weight reduction, etc. And Unlimited for those serious guys with turbo, SC, or nitrous.

It doesn't really matter what I have from the factory as much as the final product that ends up racing. 3.5 to 3.5, a properly setup 4th gen swap should be quicker than any of the later 3.5 maximas just due to weight savings. I don't know why you would even argue that... The variable intake cam is great but not equal to enough power to make up 500 lbs. Although I will admit, it doesn't appear to be even close to 500 lbs in the case of your car. Sunroof and full interior I guess?

Man this is going to be fun. Looks like its pretty well planned. Can`t wait for the final rules to come out.
Also wanted to say the OP very nice number btw.

Thank you. It is definitely well organized. It is what I do all day, every day... organize and promote MAXUS 09 on top of running NWP Engineering.
Got a question. Sparks...you said you gained 3mph in the 1/4 from opening the cutout. Well if this is true has anybody ran like a QTP electric cutout right after the y-pipe??? Because theoretically that would be the same result, just spittballing here because I got my 5.5gen back and I'm getting ready to do another header/y-pipe install on it and I remembered you said you gained a lot from running it open so I figured I would see what you guys thought of that idea...

I shave exactly .15 in the 1/4 mile every single time I open the cutout. When I'm bracket racing, my car is within .02-.03 consistency. Well.... WAS. haha So it's really easy to tell the .15 reduction in the 1/4 mile time.
You would probably see an even bigger improvement in your ETs if you are somehow putting the cutout before your stock cat.

I run my cutout just after the Ypipe. But I welded it in my testpipe, which takes the place of the cat. I am running the stock Bpipe and muffler.

My next exhaust setup will eventually include an electric cutout that opens using a boost switch (cheap little map switch basically) so when I'm over say 5psi It'll open... will be loud with the external wastegate anyway so why not right?
Sparks, congrats on the great times and thanks for sharing your steps along the way. I have the Cattman headers/ypipe, a resonated test pipe, then the stock catback. I really feel the oem catback is holding me back and was debating going with a 3" catback VS an E-Cutout after the Ypipe. I really like how quiet and unasumming the car is w/ the stock catback and your results have pretty much convinced me to go the E-Cutout route. If I can gain a solid 2-3mph from this mod it would be money well spent. Thanks again and good luck @ Maxus - wish I could go but that's too far away for me.

I still think modifying the cattman Y-pipe to a 3" collector instead of the 2.5" or even converting it to an X/H-pipe and run the 2.25" back true dual style would show gains on a N/A 3.5 as well.
What times did you end up running open and closed? I'm hoping to drop into the 12s N/A this time with the UTEC. Going from map 0 to map 1 (self tuned) is a way bigger difference in power (butt-dyno) than I expected. I'm going to try with my ghetto "catback" installed (2.5" pipe with 2 resonators that dumps before the first bend) and then pull it off (open ypipe) and see if there's any difference. I'm thinking it will still make a 1-2 mph difference. The only reason I don't buy a cutout is b/c I'm waiting to do any more exhaust work until I run my turbo feedpipe/downpipe so I don't waste money.
What kind of timing are you running? I'm running around 27degrees of timing all around, it doesn't detonate above that, but I don't get any noticeable difference going from 27 to 31-32, so I assume around 25-27 is as far as I'm going to make power with. This is without a dyno or even track times, I was just trying to go with knock and a pretty well tuned butt-dyno, lol.
