Mechanical/electrical Problem

Hey Guys,

I have the opportunity to acquire a 1985 Nissan Maxima from my father. The only catch is that there is problem that happened recently that has caused most of the electrical systems not to function. The car still starts, but the fans, lights, radio, AC and security system do not work. Also, the car exhaust smells very strong. It seem that about 1/4th of the fuse box is receiving power. Does anyone have an idea as to what could be wrong? If it is a cheap fix, I will have it repaired, otherwise I am going to donate it and take the tax write-off. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Have you checked the fusible links, I'll bet one of them is burned/open and not letting the 12volts get to the other fuses. The fusible links are easy to get to and check, located on the driver side in the engine compartment, on the fender. There may also be one on the Battery terminal connector. Looks like a small loop of wire, heck that what they are. Anyway check them out and if you do find one bad, now you have to find out why it went bad. Could be the alternator, a short some where, anyway start with the fusible links.

Good luck, Al
