turbo on 2nd gen
I believe $3-4k is about right for a turn key turbo conversion if you don't do the labor yourself. What you do is buy a VG30ET or at least the manifolds + turbo. Get a Z31 turbo ECU/fuel injectors and add a wire that runs from the Knock sensor (you will have to install this part) to the ECU's pin #29. Finally get a walbro fuell pump and you should be set. The extra $1-2k would cover the fabrication work for the exhaust piping and intake if you must have an IC.

Ok given the stock turbo + bolt ons and 11-13psi, an auto would run around low-mid 14s. A 5spd would probably run low 14s.

Well, it's kind of preference sort of. The 5-speed will definately be quicker, but like you said, it will have a tendency to go south if you don't do something to it to take the power. The auto would do nice, but if you want to car to have great performance, you might want to do the Level 10 mod for it. It will essentially make the auto bullet proof.

Yeah, auto is definitely the way to go. I believe some shop in California that mods Nissans tried to turbo a car with a stick. The third gear ended up getting ground down smooth.
But like Sarin said, you'd have to go with a Level 10 rebuilt tranny (or something along those lines) in order to handle a good deal of horsepower, I really doubt that the stock transmission can.

I do not know if the 2nd gen is anything like the 4th gen, but 5spd would be the preference with a 4th gen.. or else having a really built automatic.. my stock 5spd tranny is holding well over 400hp and many trips to the track already.. our 5spds are very strong, whereas a stock automatic in a 4th gen would be worthless in a matter of no time..

Another thing that I wanted to mention. If you plan to do the turbo, and want to use the 5-speed, I highly recommend doing a 5-spd swap with a 3rd gen 5-speed. The synchros in the third gen are much better, and the gear ratios a tad bit closer together, though not by much. It is possible to do the swap, because I've done it with my 86 when the original transmission bearings went out. Things you will need to look out though. The second gens have 2 mounts, where the thirds have three, the speedometer in the third gen is electronic, so you have to swap that out with your old one, last, the shift linkage is the different, so you have to swap that out with your old one. One tip, make sure who ever does your car that they do the clutch right, or you will have a really nice shifting problem, and make sure they hook up your reverse lights. I still have no reverse lights, and I don't have the time to figure out how to hook them back up.
