Power Steering

Hey what's up. I am hearing a noise when I turn left or right, a whizzing noise, like a low horn. I put power steering fluid in it and it's ok for a while, but then it does it again after a few days. Any suggestions as to what could be the problem? I don't see anything on the ground as far as a leak, so what other things could it be?

You are leaking it, but you may be leaking mostly while driving, and hence, while the pump is pushing the fluid - therfore, not leaving any puddles. First thing to do is check all of your hoses, and the rack itself, around the boots, and the gear assembly...

Also, make sure that you are using Dexron II or greater ATF for your P/S, and NOT P/S fluid.

rotjohns,

i had the same problem, and had to keep topping it up, yet i had no puddles either. I got it checked out and it turns out none of the hoses are leaking, it's the pump itself. ALl the fluid just surrounds the pump and makes a big mess, and any excess drips down while you're driving. I got a replacement priced at 420$ canadian, kinda pricey, so i'm going to leave it for now till i get the cash, but i hope this info helps, u may wanna look at the pump to see if it's all wet.

I think ATF is used instead of regualar power steering fluid because it's thicker and doesn't leak as easily. I know even the new nissans use ATF for power steering. that's what my 2003 Sentra uses. maybe that's why you're leaking it? I can't tell you for sure.

It could very well be the pump...if so, I STRONGLY recommend rebuilding it yoursefl first. The kit only runs about $15 - $20, and takes longer to r/r the pump than to rebuild it. The only thing that could be wrong with the pump, requiring replacement would be a cracked casing, or a bent shaft...and in either case, a junker pump could be bought cheap, and rebuilt, using all the good pieces from both pumps, to make one good one, with all new seals.

If you were local, I'd do it for you for a very low rate...but since you're so far north, don't know what to tell you.
