sounds like a belt just needs to be tightened. try to figure out which one, you have 3 to choose from. run your fingers down each belt and feel if any are loose. they should be tight - but not too tight.
with the engine running, turn on the A/C. if there is screeching (the lights may also dim and/or the voltmeter may drop) then it's the compressor belt.
with the engine running, cut the steering wheel from side to side. if it hesitates or feels spongy, then the power steering pump/water pump belt needs to be tightened.
if the voltmeter drops, alternator light comes on, and/or the lights dim while you hear the screeching, it is either the compressor belt (crankshaft to compressor) or the alternator belt (compressor to alternator).
the crankshaft pulley is the large (main) pulley with 7 small lines scribed into the outer ring. the water pump pulley will have no holes, but 4 bolts, and the power steering pump has several large holes in it. I'm assuming you know what the alternator and compressor look like.
Now, to tighten them...... here is the easiest way.
(1) jack up the front end of your Maxima and remove the front passengers side wheel.
(2) with a philips-head screwdriver, unscrew and remove the splash shield behind the shock absorber. you will see the entire crankshaft pulley.
the inner belt about 1/2" thick runs from there around the water pump, around the power steering pump, and around a tensioner.
the thick outer belt about 1" thick runs from there to a tensioner, then to the compressor.
to tighten the water pump/power steering belt, locate the tensioner. it will be on the bottom under the car, near the crankshaft pulley. there will be a 12mm bolt on the bottom. turn this bolt to tighten/loosen the belt.
to tighten the compressor belt, the tensioner is on top, accessible from under the hood. it will be a little behind the compressor in a difficult spot to get to. the easiest way to describe it is to say follow the belt until it goes to the pulley where there is a 10mm bolt pointing upwards. this bolt tightens/loosens the belt, but you will need a long socket extension to reach this.
to tighten the alternator belt, get back underneath the car. loosen the 12mm bolt on the top of the alternator just a little bit, and do the same with the bottom bolt where there is a long screw. then turn the nut on the end of that long screw to loosen/tighten the belt.
that's basically all there is to it. while you're working with the belts, it's a good idea to check them out and see what their physical condition is. they should not be cracked, dry-rotted, deteriorated, peeling, damaged, etc. replacing them is really simple and any service manual covers this.
